Job Summary


The Can-SOLVE CKD Network is Canada’s largest-ever kidney research initiative. It is a national partnership of patients, researchers, health care providers, and policy-makers working to transform treatment and care for Canadians affected by chronic kidney disease. The network is changing the culture of kidney research by coordinating and conducting innovative projects shaped by patients’ experiences and priorities. It is also creating resources and national infrastructure that enhance Canada’s ability to lead innovative kidney health research.


Chronic kidney disease disproportionately affects Indigenous communities and those living in rural and remote locations. Can-SOLVE CKD is working to address these disparities with the guidance of the Indigenous Peoples’ Engagement and Research Council (IPERC) and through a new role dedicated to Cultural Competency across the network.


The Cultural Competency Manager works with the Wabishki Bizhiko Skaanj (WBS) Working Group to develop and implement a strategic plan, goals and objectives to enhance cultural competency across the network. He/she/they assesses the training needs of network members and makes plans to address these needs, through the provision of available training opportunities within the network’s WBS learning pathway, or other available opportunities.

Can-SOLVE CKD is a national network; therefore, some travel will be required, both to communities and network meetings. The position is a one-year contract role, approximately 5 days per week, with the possibility of renewal and extension subject to funding and performance.


Organizational Status


The Cultural Competency Manager works with the Wabishki Bizhiko Skaanj (WBS) Working Group and Knowledge Keeper Advisors for day-to-day work and implementation of the network’s cultural competency strategic plan. He/She/They also works in collaboration with other members of the Indigenous Initiatives Team to advance cultural competency, cultural safety and humility throughout the network. Functional reporting is to the Network Executive Director.


Work Performed


  • Represents Can-SOLVE CKD Network Indigenous Initiatives on various committees and working groups
  • A. Cultural Competency Lead (75%):
  • Work in partnership with various Indigenous content experts and nephrology trainees, investigators, leadership, community representatives, and organizations to implement and mobilize patient-oriented and cultural competency educational workshops, seminars and sessions.
  • Develop, host and facilitate the Wabishki Bizhiko Skaanj learning pathway including management of one-time and ongoing training initiatives ensuring culturally specific and appropriate protocols are followed.
  • Ensure Indigenous ways of knowing, doing and being are included in network activities, including planning, delivering, and assisting with appropriate Indigenous ceremonies
  • Consult, create and maintain partnerships with Indigenous communities and organizational representatives to define appropriate learning objectives, content and trainings.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Develop and implement appropriate tracking, evaluation criteria and tools
  • Conduct literature searches and keeps up to date with current trends and affairs relevant to Indigenous Cultural Competency and Safety.
  • Consult and maintain the Wabishki Bizhiko Skaanj working group to plan, develop and implement a Cultural Competency strategic plan.


B. Other Educational and Administrative Duties (25%):


  • Make recommendations for appropriate instructors and speakers to deliver content and trainings, initiates contact and organizes sessions.
  • Develop appropriate tracking, evaluation criteria and tools
  • Conduct literature reviews, as necessary.
  • Plan, develop, coordinate, implement and manage educational activities such as workshops, seminars, consultations, presentations and lectures.
  • Contribute to Can-SOLVE CKD reports, newsletters, and other communications materials
  • Develops and delivers presentations on behalf of Can-SOLVE CKD Network.
  • Makes and implements recommendations for appropriate content and curriculum.
  • Hold working group meetings for planning and programming purposes, with a focus on tracking decisions and action items for follow up.


Consequence of Error/Judgement


Work requires initiative, creativity, and attention to detail. The incumbent must be capable of managing and coordinating a number of tasks at the same time. The position requires the ability to manage the work effectively, seeking clarification on the management of project priorities, schedules, and resource requirements as needed.The individual must also be able to work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Accuracy is essential since errors may negatively affect Network projects, the patient community, future funding, and the reputation of the Network and partners.


Supervision Received


The Cultural Competency Manager is required to work independently with minimal managerial direction in assigned areas of responsibility, with input from the Indigenous Initiatives Team, committee co-chairs and the Network Executive Director. The role reports directly to the Network Executive Director.

Minimum Qualifications


Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of four years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.


Preferred Qualifications

▪ Experience working in health care or health research


▪ Strong facilitation skills


▪ Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (or equivalent)


▪ Experience working with diverse Indigenous and non-Indigenous groups


▪ Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing


▪ Experience in project planning and management


▪ Proficiency in documenting requirements and plans.


▪ Proficiency in MS Office Suite.


▪ Indigenous language skills an asset.


Knowledge and Abilities


▪ Knowledge of Indigenous communities, governance models and concerns with respect to health and wellness


▪ Understanding in Decolonizing systems, anti-racism pedagogy, cultural safety and/or transformational learning frameworks are an asset.


▪ Knowledge of inter-cultural dynamics and ability to navigate complex situations with cultural sensitivity


▪ Demonstrated understanding and application of Indigenous and Western knowledges


▪ Understanding of Patient-Oriented Research (POR) principles and practices


▪ Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities and demonstrate strong organizational skills.


▪ Demonstrated ability to take initiative, and exercise judgment and discretion.


▪ Demonstrated ability to lead, problem solve, and utilize team building skills


▪ Ability to work well independently and in a team environment.
