We are looking for a savvy Chartered Professional Accountant ready for the next step in their career to join our dynamic team as Controller in our New Westminster office. You will report directly to the Director of Finance and be immersed in the financial well-being of our growing company. As controller, you will have overall responsibility for the day-to-day accounting and finance function, mentoring and motivating your team. An integral part of the financial team; the Controller will be relied on to provide key financial information and reports in a timely and efficient manner to better allow the Executive Team and management to make informed decisions. You will manage and guide the accounting team to provide timely and accurate financial reporting, efficient information processing and deep financial insight into the company. You will act as a key support to the Director of Finance and the Executive Team in executing the company strategy. You will also be responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting practices while training and mentoring junior staff.
The Controller will be the go- to person for the Director of Finance, adding value through their knowledge, experience, and willingness to assist with whatever is needed to get the job done. You enjoy working in a fast-paced and challenging work environment. The ideal candidate will be a mature, confident, team player who , sees “the big picture” and is able to incorporate their leadership skills to motivate and mentor their team. Although the Accounting Department team members are responsible for day-to-day transaction processing, a hands approach is required for some functions as well as an understanding of your team members’ activities.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of 2 years+ experience as a Controller in the waste management, manufacturing or transportation sector.
- Demonstrated independent problem-solving skills.
- The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with staff, peers and superiors both within and outside of the company.
- CPA designation with a minimum of 5+ years experience.
- Strong time management and prioritization skills.
- Must have mid-market private company experience.
- Attention to detail with strong analytical skills & follow up.
- Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with various stakeholders and present financial information clearly.
- Strong data analytical skills combined with ability to identify and solve problems and apply innovative solutions to ensure organizational improvements.
- Ensure deadlines are met.
- 5+ years of experience working in a financial management position.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple demands and competing priorities.
- Demonstrated leadership background with the ability to influence positive change.
- Proven ability to develop strong relationships based on trust and integrity.
- Advanced skill set in MS Office and demonstrated superior skills with MS Excel.
- Knowledge of Adagio is an asset.
- Self-motivated and results-oriented.
- Superior attention to detail without losing high-level perspective.
The Role:
- IT management – Oversee: purchases of hardware and software; employee and systems setups; service expectations of third-party IT provider.
- Developing the finance team by managing performance, providing ongoing training, and maintaining strong employee relationships.
- Preparing cash flow forecasts in accordance with policy.
- Overseeing the tracking of projects and capital expenditures.
- Acting as the key liaison for all software and outsourcing providers.
- Monitoring financial results and covenants, and reporting findings to the Executive Team.
- Strong industry operating experience
- Supporting the development and implementation of IT policy and best practice guidelines for the company.
- Managing and mentoring financial team; ensuring that direct reports have clear job targets.
- Developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure that personnel and financial information is secure.
- Monitoring and analyzing the financial department to develop more efficient procedures and proper use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
- Driving improvements to accounting processes and systems to obtain operational efficiencies, improve internal controls and produce financial information in a more accurate, effective, and timely manner.
- Continuously identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices across the organization.
- Liaising with and supporting the Executive and Management Team on any financial analysis or issues.
- Leading and managing the delivery of full cycle accounting functions on a regular basis, including, but not limited to accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll, and taxes.
- Supporting the acquisition of capital assets.
- Reviewing variances and financial results and providing detailed information to the Executive Team.
- Competing all necessary reporting requirements and supporting external auditors on the annual audit engagement.
- Performing additional duties as assigned by the Director of Finance.
- Ensuring that financial statements and management reports are prepared in accordance with ASPE GAAP or best practices.
- Ensuring accuracy and deadlines are met for financial and other reports.

- Bachelor's Degree (preferred)
