Communications Specialist

Reporting to the Manager, Organizational Change & Communications, the Communications Specialist helps plan and execute internal and external communication and engagement strategies to advance WEST-Alliance Office (AO) priorities and initiatives. The Specialist has superior written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills and is extremely detail-oriented, capable of simultaneously managing multiple projects and client expectations.


What You’ll Do


  • Participates as a member of various project and team meetings throughout the WEST-AO and beyond to provide and collect information regarding communication issues.
  • Researches, writes, edits and produces communication content, in collaboration with other Communications teams members, to engage internal and external audiences on the issues, changes, opportunities and everyday successes happening in the world of health care. This can include newsletter articles, organizational bulletins, web content, intranet updates, speeches, briefing notes, video scripts, presentations and more.
  • Provides outstanding customer service, with the ability to build rapport and trust with a broad group of internal and external stakeholders, and listen closely for insight about what clients really need in order to advance audience engagement.
  • Designs and produces digital content such as graphics for internal communications channels, digital signage and presentations to support campaigns led by the Communications team.
  • Supporting training and communication as part of change management (e.g., designing or delivering specialized training to end users). 
  • Fosters open dialogue between key stakeholders and communicates messages clearly and concisely to promote awareness of initiatives and contribute to a positive reputation for WEST.
  • Shares knowledge with fellow team members and others internal and external to WEST AO for the purposes of communication, high performance teamwork and continual quality improvement to support an innovative culture and a learning organization.
  • Liaises with stakeholders, including directors, managers and other experts within the HAs and NTT to develop a broad understanding of important issues, challenges and strategic directions being undertaken.
  • Facilitate meetings (inclusive of agenda, minutes and other meeting materials)
  • Participates as a member of the WEST-AO Communications team to ensure quality and consistency in writing, production, branding and delivery of content across digital channels.
  • Execute on Communications and Change Management plans to support WEST-AO in the successful delivery of various key initiatives / priorities (such as the WEST Strategy) as defined and approved by Provincial Executive Steering Committees (i.e., JESC, IESC, EMC, etc.)  
  • Contributes to the development, content management and content creation for WEST e-newsletters, websites, and the intranet.
  • Develop engagement strategy(s), plan(s) and schedule(s) to support various WEST-AO initiatives / priorities. 
  • Supports the organization and management of special events such as staff town halls.
  • Produce presentation and training materials, status reports, etc. and other related administrative tasks.
  • Development and ongoing updates/revisions related to WEST-AO onboarding materials, as wells as other related materials (i.e., presentations, 1-pagers, etc.). 


What You Bring


We are looking for a Communications Specialist who is able to relate to a diverse group of Clients (e.g., clinical, technical, etc.) and other stakeholders. Critical skill sets are as follows:


  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent proficiency with MS Office toolsets (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively facilitate discussions with a diverse group of stakeholders, users, etc.
  • Proficiency in crafting content for various platforms and stakeholders
  • Critical thinking skills and strong process orientation.
  • Proven work experience as a Communications Specialist or similar role, demonstrating successful management of communication strategies and campaigns.
  • Understanding of organizational dynamics to manage variety of different stakeholders.
  • Exceptional ability to translate and express clinical, process and technical problems, outcomes and benefits using layperson terms.
  • Degree/Diploma in Communications, Business Administration or related field
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Organizational and time management skills.
  • Experience working with leaders and building relationship building at all levels (i.e. end-users to C-level).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple clinical and business stakeholders and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to take ownership and independently drive progress.

Job Type: Casual (Full-time hours)


Wage: $72,445 – $90,556 per year. As a casual employee, total earnings includes an additional 12.6% in lieu of benefits and paid time off. The rate for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan.
