Reporting to the Director, Marketing and Communications, the Communications Officer is an experienced and highly motivated communications professional who works within the Marketing and Communications team and promotes and propels the STARS brand through strategic communications, media and public relations, and issues management. The Communications Officer will work shoulder to shoulder with STARS’ foundation and operations teams to provide end-to-end communications support for a world-class critical care non-profit. With demonstrated experience, you will be highly motivated, curious, strategic, and self-driven. You will thrive on collaboration with clients, colleagues and other allies and will align with the STARS values and strategic vision.


Do you have what it takes?


  • Serve as a communications professional on the Marketing & Communications team, providing strategic guidance and counsel to colleagues and leadership on a range of communications initiatives and portfolios;
  • Prepare media materials, including news releases, backgrounders and media advisories;
  • Support brand consistency across the organization;
  • Develop, manage and execute on communication strategies to support the needs of STARS foundation and operations;
  • Other duties as required.
  • Serve as primary contact for media and other media relations activities and events;
  • Build STARS’ presence in the community by fostering new and ongoing relationships with individuals and groups in the communities we serve;
  • Be the relationship manager for Very Important Patients (VIPs) in Alberta and own the organizational-wide procedures for this program;
  • Proactively pitch media, coordinate media events, coordinate video and photo shoots, provide media coaching and support media tracking efforts;
  • Liaise with Foundation colleagues to support fundraising and awareness-building initiatives;
  • Proactively manage major initiatives and assigned portfolios to successful completion;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a mature, professional and calm demeanour;
  • Write and edit key messages, news releases, web content, marketing collateral, speaking notes, newsletter stories and publications;
  • Advanced time management skills, ability to thrive with multiple priorities and extremely tight timeframes and deadlines;
  • Ensure web communication is part of overall communication approach by supporting STARS’ presence on social media channels and other emerging media opportunities;
  • Oversee communications-related aspects of STARS’ emergency response plans;
  • Collaboration and teambuilding skills, attention to detail, flexibility and initiative;
  • Ability to take both a very detailed tactical approach and the “big picture”/ strategic approach, dependent upon the circumstances;
  • Ability to manage direction and input from internal and external sources;
  • Be available for after-hours on-call responsibilities;
  • Create compelling copy for promotional materials including event handouts, invitations, proposals, brochures, posters, advertisements and other materials as required;
  • Project management and problem-solving skills;
  • Respond to media requests and act as STARS spokesperson when necessary;


Education And Experience


  • Demonstrated ability to provide thought partnership on complex projects and issues;
  • 5-7 years of progressive professional communications, public relations, media relations, or equivalent combination of education & experience in a related field will be considered.
  • Experience writing and editing for various mediums;
  • Portfolio demonstrating ability to create strong, compelling collateral;
  • Experience working with media and acting as a spokesperson when required;
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in communications, public relations, or journalism preferred:
