Report to the Civil/Industrial Operations Manager, the Civil Estimator will be responsible to provide accurate and timely estimates of all costs for civil earthworks and foundations on heavy industrial projects.They will also support project management for new construction and maintenance contracts, ensuring profitability and customer satisfaction are achieved.
Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the Project Manager in awarding of sub-trade contracts.
  • Prepare and manage project budgets during design.
  • Liaise with project manager and site superintendent and ensure constructability is addressed during budgeting and tendering.
  • Identify, address and resolve issues and problems as or before they occur.
  • Attend meetings with owner and consultants and be comfortable to provide input at the meetings.
  • Prepare tender documents and trade scopes prior to tendering.
  • Maintain the highest standards of professional ethics and integrity when representing Bird Construction.
  • Work closely with the Operations Manager, project manager, site superintendent, owner, consultants, suppliers and trades to identify, develop, implement and support cost-effective project delivery.
  • Develop and execute a project strategy that meet the project’s required performance, schedule and profitability targets.
  • Provide preconstruction services from the development of preliminary budgets, cost plans, value engineering exercises, start to finish of tender process and award of sub-contracts.
  • Participate in project scheduling activities and provide input on achieving preconstruction activities.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with client, consultants, suppliers and trades.
  • Ensure that preconstruction deadlines are achieved.
  • Contribute current cost and productivity information to the company data base.
  • Participate in the project development activities to secure the project(s).
What we are Looking For

  • Ability to read blueprints and drawings and define the scope of work and project specifications
  • Experience working with estimating software programs an asset
  • Proficiency with Primavera P6 is an asset
  • Ability to quantify materials and supplies from blueprints and drawings and to determine work priorities, sequence of how the project is built and how sub-trades work together
  • Ability to work within tight deadlines and prioritization of work to achieve them
  • 2-5 years’ progressive experience in an estimating role and project management, preferably in an industrial/civil construction environment
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet the time demands of unpredictable activities; capable of handling pressure and challenges in a dynamic business environment
  • Ability to communicate with project team, subtrades, consultants and owner; understand the issues and be an active participant in the preconstruction process
  • Supportive of a culture that encompasses the highest ethical standards aligned with the Company Promise
  • Technical training in project management, drafting and engineering design, trade certificates and/or field experience an asset
  • Highly developed interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Undergraduate degree or College diploma in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or engineering an asset
  • Ability to interpret and understand contract terms and conditions and their implications
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Eligible for or have attained PQS, CET, GSC, or P.Eng designations an asset
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, troubleshooting, problem-solving and negotiation skills and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to deal with great quantities and diverse detailed information and be able to maintain data pertinent to the various projects simultaneously
