The Opportunity


Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the Child Protection - Intake Worker is a member of the Suspected Trauma and Abuse Response Team (START) and is responsible for providing information, assessment and support to patients and families at entry and transfer points for START. The Child Protection - Intake Worker empathically and effectively collects clinical information from clients, families and collateral sources, applies this information to a decision-making model, and uses informed clinical judgement to develop appropriate care plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and partner agencies. The Child Protection – Intake Worker offers appropriate next step follow-up and supports clients and families in accessing needed services, using a client-centred and trauma-informed approach. The Child Protection - Intake Worker has knowledge of available resources within the IWK Health Centre and community to address issues and facilitates referrals for families. The Child Protection - Intake Worker exhibits a commitment to the highest standard of professional integrity, by interacting with colleagues, patients, families, students, and partners in a respectful and collaborative manner in keeping with principles of client centred, family centred, and trauma informed care, IWK Health Centre standards, and their own Standards of Professional Practice as applicable.


Hours of Work


Monday to Friday 8:30 - 4:30, some evenings and weekends may be required.


Your Qualifications


  • Ability to match criteria for clinical streams to identified patient and family needs.
  • Demonstrated clinical competence and experience with the described patient population.
  • Able to work in a collaborative and consultative manner as part of an interprofessional team.
  • Current successful completion of a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Basic Life Support (BLS) program within the last 12 months required or successful completion of a BLS Renewal Challenge Certificate required.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset.
  • Registration with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers (NSCSW) required.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and ability to engage and treat an “at risk” population, preferred.
  • Ability to use databases to collect patient information and to retrieve reports related to patient demographics and wait times.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years' experience in intake and/or client navigation, preferred.
  • Ability to accurately enter data into patient information systems required.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently conduct telephone facilitated intake for the purpose of booking appointments, providing information and support to patients and families.
  • Minimum of two (2) years related clinical experience, required.
  • Knowledge of Department of Community Services (DCS) processes preferred
  • Knowledge of IWK and community resources (DCS, law enforcement, SANE, victim services) and skills in navigating systems.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) certification required or willingness to gain certification.
  • Experience in child protection settings preferred.
  • Bachelor of Social Work required.
  • Ability to assess risk of harm to self and others and triage appropriately.
