Job Description

TECAS is hiring!

Toews Environmental Consulting & Aquatic Sciences is a Winnipeg-based consultancy providing specialist advisory expertise and complete multidisciplinary services on widely diverse projects in waters across Canada.Led by Jay Toews P.Biol., R.P.Bio., C.Chem., P.Chem., TECAS is a place to feed passion by doing excellent work, develop expertise while collaborating with other professionals, and truly participate in ownership and growth in a workplace that advances science while putting people first.

Upcoming opportunities to conduct primary research on water quality and all trophic levels in freshwaters provide the opportunity for TECAS to hire full-time team leaders in environmental chemistry and aquatic ecology.

The ideal candidates will be:

•An intermediate to senior aquatic ecologist / fish habitat biologist / regulatory specialist with sufficient experience to lead regulatory permitting for diverse projects in water, including habitat offsetting projects to support Fisheries Act authorizations. This candidate will have knowledge and interest in lower trophic levels in lake and river environments.

•A junior to intermediate environmental chemist, toxicologist or limnologist with experience designing and conducting field studies, working in an analytical laboratory, and writing reports in academia and/or consulting. This candidate will have knowledge and interest in freshwater ecology at all trophic levels.

Candidates will require excellent field skills and aptitudes including physical strength and mindfulness to care for delicate electronic scientific instruments while operating and trouble-shooting equipment such as boats, motors and trailers (even in inclement weather, if necessary). The chemist’s position will include a minor component of laboratory work including reagent preparation and maintenance and calibration of instrumentation.

Writing skills are highly valued, as every team member will lead or contribute to report writing in the projects they’re involved in.

The positions will be formed around the capabilities, experience levels, and interests of the selected applicants. As opportunities develop, the employees will be offered mentorship, responsibility, project management and leadership opportunities commensurate with their expertise, level of experience and ability to work independently.

The successful candidates will work together in all aspects of the work from study design to field studies to client and regulator liaison to report writing, with the support and oversight of senior professional staff.Upcoming work includes the design, conduct and publication (in peer-reviewed scientific journals) of primary research studies using and evaluating emerging technologies in water quality management.Current projects include effluent receiving stream studies with water quality modeling, nutrient budgets and algae studies, fish and mussel relocations, and fish habitat-related projects including habitat enhancement at a stream channel realignment.

The successful candidates will work primarily from home with flexible hours but will have access to home-based office and laboratory space in central Winnipeg. Some activities will require attendance at the TECAS office.Field work is expected to comprise shorter, more focused studies with more variety than much of the consulting industry offers.

TECAS is a place to learn with every project and activity, a place to steer the development of the company as well as one’s own professional career, and a place that provides true opportunity for ownership. We value all manners of diversity and will invite selected applicants to speak with previous staff prior to joining the team.We are a small team upholding tenets of integrity of character, commitment to excellence, continual professional development, and care for people as people.

At TECAS, we believe in advancing science and promoting its practical application across geographic and regulatory landscapes.Whatever skills and interests you might have, we can probably use and develop them!
