Certificate in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST)

Knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the mental health system including acute in-patient, psychosocial rehabilitation and community mental health

Knowledge of mental health self-help organizations: co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders; and consumer and family engagement principles

Knowledge of evidenced-based therapeutic counseling models and approaches

Knowledge of mental health issues, including signs and symptoms of mental illness

Knowledge of cultural diversity and practices of the population to be served

May provide short-term follow-up treatment and case management services for pediatric patients treated in the Emergency Department.

Knowledge of Crisis Intervention Theory and demonstrated skill in crisis intervention with children, adolescents and families.

Demonstrated knowledge and skill in individual, family and group interventions.

Comprehensive knowledge of community response procedures, mental health assessment, general counselling principles and intervention techniques.

Comprehensive knowledge of Systems Theory and an ability to incorporate this into mental health assessments and treatment Intervention.

Comprehensive knowledge of the developmental stages in the individual and within the family life cycle of psychosocial issues.

Demonstrated psychotherapy skills including supportive, counseling and cognitive-behavioural interventions, client assessment, and case management skills.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience in psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery-oriented approach in mental health.

Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge and understanding of mental illness, particularly early psychosis.

Demonstrated knowledge in the area of concurrent disorders.

Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of pharmacological issues related to the identified population.

Ability to work effectively and flexibly manage changing caseload needs under pressure, and during times of change.

Demonstrate clinical coaching/teaching skills and experience

Demonstrated practice skills related to cognitive behavioral therapy, brief solution focused therapy, risk assessment and other psychotherapeutic interventions.

Demonstrate sound organizational, problem solving skills

Demonstrate sound judgment, good observation and client assessment skills, tact and empathy

Demonstrate competence congruent with the care and treatment of mental illness, substance use and/or concurrent disorders.
