Job Summary
The UI/UX Designer will support research for a Health Canada funded study on "Redesigning and upgrade of the virtual Community of Practice platform (https://caps-cpca.ubc.ca/index.php?title=Main_Page)”. This project is part of a larger grant titled “The CART Access project: Advancing access to abortion for under-served populations through tools for healthcare professionals and people seeking care” Led by PI, Wendy Norman, Professor and Lead Investigator of the Contraception and Abortion Research Team. By working collaboratively with project partners and health professional associations in Canada, the project aims to improve access to abortion resources by redesigning our virtual community of practice platform from a research implementation tool to a public/open-access platform with an option for healthcare professionals to subscribe to the site newsletter. The UI/UX Designer will be based in the co-Investigator’s Research Unit at the UBC School of Nursing in Vancouver, BC and the Women’s Health Research Institute.
Organizational Status
The UI/UX Designer will report directly to the co-Investigator, Dr. Fatawu Abdulai. They will work in close collaboration with various team members including a project manager, a research associate, and our software development team in Alberta.
Work Performed
  • Designing user flows and wireframes at a high level, as well as building out refined details
  • Create original graphic designs (e.g. images, sketches and tables)
  • Design graphic user interface elements, like menus, tabs and widgets
  • Develop UI mockups and prototypes that clearly illustrate how sites function and look like
  • Illustrate design ideas using storyboards, process flows and sitemaps
  • Applying a User-Centered Design mindset and methodology when working on product designs.
  • Adhere to style standards on fonts, colors and images
  • Identify and troubleshoot UX problems (e.g. responsiveness)
  • Prepare and present rough drafts to internal teams and key stakeholders
  • Building Sitemaps, Wireframes, Prototypes, and UX specifications that clearly articulate site/application structure and organization
  • Conducting usability testing, capturing specific target audience feedback, and incorporating that feedback into product design
  • Conduct layout adjustments based on user feedback
  • Build page navigation buttons and search fields
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The quality and productivity of the research project(s), performance of research staff, and research partnerships will be affected.
Supervision Received
The applicant is expected to function independently but will report to the project lead Dr. Fatawu Abdulai. Works with independence and autonomy within the scope of work performed. Work is reviewed periodically by the lead to assess the scope of work performed and the achievement of defined goals and key performance indicators.
Supervision Given
This position is not expected to supervise workers.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of one year of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Portfolio of design projects
  • Candidate with experience in healthcare UI/IU design will be preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Design, Computer Science, Information Systems or relevant field
  • Proven work experience as a UI/UX Designer or similar role
  • Knowledge of wireframe tools (e.g. Figma, Wireframe.cc and InVision)
  • Up-to-date knowledge of design software like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
  • Good time-management skills
  • Team spirit; strong communication skills to collaborate with various stakeholders
