The Locomotive Operator/Switchpersons with Cando Rail & Terminals, are responsible for providing safe and efficient rail car switching services. Working in a fast-paced, customer oriented environment, the Locomotive Operator/Switchperson must work well in teams to maximize efficiency and safety, while demonstrating a strong initiative and organizational skills.
Roles And Responsibilities
  • Applying rules, special instructions, and switching procedures while operating as a Locomotive Operator or Switchperson including operating switches and derails, coupling and uncoupling rail cars, managing air hoses, applying and releasing handbrakes
  • Actively participating with the team and providing excellent customer service while promoting a superior company image
  • Ensuring safe operation of the locomotive and train movements including conducting clear and concise job briefings
  • Ensuring the yard environment is free from hazards; performing regular snow clearing from switches
  • Completing daily reports, daily logs, and other reports deemed necessary
  • Participating in training or company initiatives as required
  • Completing daily inspection and testing of the locomotive brakes and safety devices
  • Providing protection of train, track, and equipment
  • Keeping the interior of the equipment, vehicles, and locomotives safe, clean, and tidy; performing regular maintenance and general repairs to the locomotive
  • Complying with all applicable operating rules, switching procedures and regulations imposed by government, the customer, and/or Cando; practicing and promoting safe work habits
Skills, Knowledge And Abilities
  • Knowledge of technology and computer systems with a willingness to use Excel and Outlook on a daily basis
  • Physically fit including the ability to pull self up and down from a railcar on a continuous basis, able to lift and twist air hoses, able to secure rail car brakes, derails, and switches
  • Excellent teamwork skills; strong customer service skills
  • Ability to read and write general documentation including safety briefings, policy and procedure manuals, and switching lists
  • Strong problem solving and decision making abilities
  • Ability to obtain certification and safety critical medical clearances including clear drug and alcohol testing
  • Willingness and ability to work in all weather conditions during day and night shifts, year round
Education And Experience
  • Experience as an Locomotive Operator or Switchperson an asset
  • Valid CROR certification and/or the ability to obtain and maintain certification
