Switchpersons are responsible for providing safe and efficient rail car switching services on customer sites. Working in a fast-paced, customer-oriented environment, the Switching crews must work well in teams to maximize efficiency and safety, while demonstrating a strong initiative and organizational skills.
Roles And Responsibilities
  • Applies rules, special instructions, and switching procedures while operating as a locomotive operator or groundsperson including operating switches and derails, coupling and uncoupling rail cars, managing air hoses, applying and releasing handbrakes
  • Provides protection of train, track, and equipment
  • Keeps the interior of the locomotive safe, clean, and tidy
  • Complies with all applicable operating rules, switching procedures and regulations imposed by government, the customer, and/or Cando; practicing and promoting safe work habits
  • Completes daily inspection and testing of the locomotive brakes and safety devices
  • Performs plant and equipment inspections and air brake tests
  • Participates in training or company initiatives as required
  • Reports all safety, equipment, and track problems
  • Completes daily reports, daily logs, and other reports deemed necessary
  • Participates with the team in providing excellent customer service while promoting a superior company image
  • Ensures safe operation of the locomotive and train movements including conducting clear and concise job briefings
Skills, Knowledge, And Abilities
  • Excellent teamwork skills
  • Ability to obtain certification and medical clearances to perform the role
  • Be able and willing to work in all weather conditions during day and night shifts, 365 days a year
  • Knowledge of technology and computer systems with a willingness to use Excel and Outlook on a daily basis
  • Physically fit including the ability to pull self up and down from a railcar on a continuous basis, ability to lift and twist air hoses, ability to secure rail car brakes, derails, and switches
  • Ability to read and write general documentation including safety briefings, policy and procedure manuals, and switching lists
Education & Experience
  • Experience operating with safety management systems
  • Experience working in a heavy construction, industrial, or rail environment
  • Experience as a qualified locomotive engineer and/or conductor is an asset
