Responsibilities


Scope and Summary of Primary Responsibilities


Performs Functional Assessments, which include education regarding vision related topics; training in the use of low vision devices; and instruction on how to maximize residual vision. This position works with individuals in all age categories. Regular travel throughout the province and occasional overnight travel will be required.


What is a Day in the Life of a Low Vision Specialist?


  • To manage a caseload, deliver awareness training and determine if the client requires referral to another VLRC service or external services.
  • To collaborate with other specialists and community partners as needed, to provide low vision therapy services.
  • To conduct assessments, provide evaluation and training to clients ensuring programs meet the individualised needs of the clients.
  • To provide training in the use of specialized equipment and help clients to determine the need for environmental modifications in the home, workplace, or community setting.
  • To support clients in their sight loss journey to enable them to maximise their health, independence and wellbeing.


Qualifications


What You Need To Be Successful in this position:


  • Ability to communicate in French and English.
  • Bachelor's degree with a preference for Social Work, Education, Nursing, Gerontology, or healthcare.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to use good judgement.
  • Computer skills, organized with an attention for detail.
  • Low Vision Therapy certification or the willingness to train.
