The Transportation Engineering Branch is responsible for the design, rehabilitation and construction of different highways, bridges and transportation infrastructure throughout Yukon. We are a diverse group of people who truly enjoy working together. The work is fast paced, varied and there isn’t a lot of downtime - even in the winter, as our planning and the majority of the design work is completed by our employees. This opportunity…
Reporting to the Geotechnical Program Manager, the Soil Technician is responsible for conducting various geotechnical investigations, monitoring test pit and drilling programs, logging soil samples, preparing borehole logs, performing quality control tests for road and aggregate production projects (i.e. nuclear densometer testing), assisting with development of granular reserves (exploration for granular and riprap materials, test pits, drilling, clearing, stripping/grubbing, access road construction, site development, pit reclamation), assisting with maintenance of lab inventory and nuclear densometers, assisting with preparation of geotechnical reports, assisting with preparation of contract documents, assisting with management of geotechnical databases, and conducting various laboratory testing on soils and BST oil (Soils: grain size analysis, proctors, Atterberg limits, density testing, LA abrasion; BST Oil: distillation, float test on residue, viscosity, penetration, extraction).

Essential Qualifications (what we’re looking for in your resume):
Please submit your resume clearly demonstrating how you meet each of the following qualifications. Please note, selection for further consideration will be based solely on the information you provide in your resume.

• Considerable experience with laboratory and field testing of asphalt, soils and aggregates related to highway construction and maintenance;
• Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology and/or registration as a CET with a recognized professional association would be an asset
• Experience working on construction sites, supervising contractors and heavy equipment;
• Experience conducting geotechnical investigations including test pits and drilling, soil logging and sampling, aggregate production, and soil compaction QA/QC;
• Experience working in a northern environment would be an asset; and
• Experience with computer software relevant to this position such as Microsoft Office, Adobe, Oracle Database, and engineering/lab applications (AutoCAD, OpenGround, gINT, PLog, ArcGIS);

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to work both independently and within a team, in office and field environments.
• Technical knowledge required to work within an asphalt/geotechnical laboratory.

Conditions of Employment
Valid Yukon Class 5 driver’s licence; Nuclear Densometer Certification must be completed within 1 month of hire.
Job Requirements
Travel throughout Yukon, working in adverse weather conditions, use of personal protective equipment.
