& Responsibilities


We are seeking a highly qualified Senior Research Engineer to focus on our tubular and flat product development research. In this technically challenging position, you will apply the knowledge of steelmaking, physical metallurgy and pipe forming operations to direct and coordinate development and improvement projects pertaining to the production and processing of hot rolled steels and heat-treated products for tubular and other flat applications. You will interact with the internal and external stakeholders to establish product and process development priorities. You will also be responsible for planning and managing trials at ENA and partner facilities and tracking production through our pipe and plate mills.


  • Play an active role and support VP and PM of R&D in establishing research collaborations with key stakeholders including universities, government laboratories and other independent labs
  • Interact and communicate with Sales, Production, QA, and Technical Services to establish product and process development priorities
  • Provide work direction and training to laboratory staff performing metallurgical and material assessments
  • Lead and conduct Alternative Energy projects focused on the production and qualification of Line Pipe and OCTG steels for Hydrogen, CO2, and Geothermal applications
  • Coordinate with R&D Program Manager and other team members in establishing a world class research facility for specialized testing
  • Communicate project updates through presentations, reports and other communication methods
  • Lead and execute the planning and conducting of mill trials and development activities in support of key EVRAZ NA business goals and objectives
  • Engage with the standard organizations for monitoring ongoing developments of relevant standards and lead our initiatives to contribute to the improvement of the current standards as well as development of new ones


Requirements


  • Knowledge of line pipe, OCTG and plate product standards and specifications is an asset
  • Knowledge on alternative energy markets, products and standards is an asset
  • Minimum 5 years of Experience in advanced materials characterization, including scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electron backscatter diffraction
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with metallurgical modelling and/or related software (e.g., Thermo-Calc, JMatPro, etc.)
  • Knowledge of statistical experimental design and analysis is required
  • Strong English communication, presentation skills and the ability to work in a cross-functional team environment are required
  • Ability to travel to various company, partner, or customer facilities outside of the work location will be expected and the ability to freely travel between the US and Canada is required
  • 10 years of relevant industrial or research experience
  • General knowledge of steelmaking, hot rolling practices and pipe forming technology is required
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in mechanical testing, including tensile, fracture toughness, and fatigue testing
  • M.Sc. in Metallurgical or Materials Engineering, preference will be given to candidates with Ph.D. and strong knowledge of steel physical metallurgy and mechanical property assessment
