Location - Enterprise Square. This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in person

Position summary
Reporting to the Director, Enterprise Information Governance, the specialist is engaged in the development and implementation of the multi-faceted information governance framework and Information Governance Program for the University of Alberta. The Specialist is focused on consultation, change management, and development of governance policy and processes that guide the collection of information and data (e.g., clarity and clear practices for common data structure classification, stewardship, and quality). Expert consultation skills are applied to educate and advise staff and leaders, including data stewards, to facilitate their transition and alignment to the new framework. The Specialist leads key governance projects, ensuring quality deliverables
Duties
  • Works with multiple groups to advise and educate them on new roles and accountabilities. Provides ongoing guidance to advance change and alignment to the Information Governance Framework.
  • Consults with various data roles and leaders to foster integration of broader thinking about governance impacts to specific actions (e.g., how will current action potentially impact subsequent actions or processes and ultimately the quality and use of data across the University?).
  • Supports assigned consultations and initiatives to clarify and define organizational-wide elements of information governance (e.g., new roles; common responsibilities of data owners; core processes for data; business glossary and data quality resolution processes).
  • Serves as an expert resource to multiple levels across the organization including data stewards, and leadership. Leads complex, specialized work on behalf of area.
  • Provides comprehensive advice, recommendations and perspectives on current organizational activities and issues related to data governance.
  • Supports change management strategies to support transition and implementation of the governance framework through the Data Governance COE.
  • Works with data stewards, who are generally executive leaders, to restructure data to support reporting and operational uses in alignment with the governance framework.
  • Within the governance framework, works with data stewards to appropriately classify and restructure data to facilitate consistency in reporting and operational uses across the University.
  • Identifies key performance indicators regarding data governance program performance and data quality metrics.
  • Builds and delivers governance training and resources as needed.
  • Develops and refines an interconnected suite of policy.
Qualifications
  • Strong project management and people management experience
  • Excellent judgment, and decision-making abilities
  • Proficient in data mining
  • Sound knowledge of the principles and approaches for information governance
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Ongoing awareness of new and leading practice and industry standards in data governance
  • 3-5 years experience in the field
  • Demonstrated exceptional internal/external relationship management skills
  • Effective written and oral communication and presentation skills with diverse audiences
  • Demonstrated experience in analyzing data to create high quality, relevant information products
  • Ability to see the big picture and understand the details
