Electrical Engineer - SCADA Engineer
The P&C Engineering SCADA Design Team provides engineering expertise and support to high voltage transmission substations, generating stations and distribution facilities. Our team also provides project management, design, maintenance and emergency response services to the company and selected external clients. The successful candidate will be part of the SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) design team delivering complex, multi-discipline capital projects for BC Hydro.
This role requires experience with the design, configuration, testing and troubleshooting of SCADA systems in electrical utility substations with operating voltages from 12kV to 500kV. Demonstrated experience working with utility SCADA systems design, including the design, configuration, testing, and maintenance of GE RTU products (i.e. GE D400, D20, D200, D25, IBOX), Ethernet networks, DNP3 protocol, Modbus Plus® protocol, and protocol test equipment and software and other similar systems used in electrical utility substations.
The work is focused on SCADA systems used in transmission stations with operating voltages from 12kV to 500kV.
Duties
Duties will primarily be focused on delivering capital work involving integration of remote monitoring and control equipment of the power system. Providing design, development and testing of equipment used in substations, generating stations and the distribution system.
- Completed work is normally accepted as technically accurate and is reviewed for feasibility and soundness of judgment.
- Prepare project documentation and deliverables in accordance with BC Hydro project and Engineering Design Practices (i.e. evaluation reports, specifications, proposals, estimates, design basis', calculations, hazard logs, test plans).
- Uses initiative and judgment to develop innovative engineering techniques and applies theoretical and practical knowledge in the analysis and resolution of problems. Discusses unusual problems with senior engineers or the supervisor.
- Provide technical assistance and construction support in the field, and undertake field reviews as required by EGBC.
- Prepare design work packages including scope, duration, and level of effort estimates.
- Specify and procure materials, panel assemblies and other related equipment.
- Configuring/program RTUs, gateway devices, user interfaces, network switches/routers, and other IEDs related to the SCADA systems.
- Provide training for end-users and peers on the theory and operational use of the installed or modified equipment/systems.
- Test and validate device configurations in a lab environment.
- Prepare detailed SCADA design packages, device point assignments, and configurations.
- Prepare and execute pre-commissioning test plans for SCADA systems.
- Reviews overall plans and provides guidance for unusual features.
- Checks work and provides guidance to assigned staff.
- Maintain strong constructive relationships with internal and external clients and across the organization also including external service providers, contractors and suppliers as required.
- Works under general supervision, with work assigned in terms of specific objectives.
- Prepare signed/sealed engineering deliverables as a Professional of Record (PoR) in accordance with EGBC and BC Hydro Design Practices.
- Provide technical guidance and support throughout the design process (cross-discipline integration, factory testing, installation, commissioning).
Must have:
- Experience and desire to work with utility based Ethernet control networks, configuration and testing of remote control equipment, PLC programming, trouble shooting methodologies, and LAN/WAN technologies focused on utility solutions is required.
- Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC can transfer from another province.
- A minimum of 4-8 years related work experience in automation or control systems
- Degree in Electrical Engineering from an institute accredited by the Engineers and Geoscientist of BC (EGBC).
Nice to have:
- Experience with programming of GE Remote Terminal Units.
- Knowledge of NERC standards is desired”
- Experience with DNP3, networking protocols, Cyber Security and delivering M2M networking applications is desired.
1 year contract with expectation to extend based on good performance.
Hybrid work week schedule from Burnaby office and home.
