Job Description
Position Overview
School of Public Policy invites applications for a Research Associate. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The School of Public Policy (the School) is Canada's leading policy school. The School was founded in 2008 by renowned economist Jack Mintz with a vision to drive policy discourse with relevant research, outreach and teaching. The School of Public Policy provides a practical, global and focused perspective on public policy analysis and practice in four focus areas: Fiscal and Economic Policy, Social and Health Policy, Energy and Environmental Policy, and International Policy and Trade. The School achieves its mandate through integrated activity across its academic programming, research portfolio and extensive outreach.
The Energy and Environmental Policy Research Division (EEP) at the School of Public Policy undertakes policy research and analysis across a wide variety of policy issues. Areas of focus include decarbonization of the energy system, energy and environmental literacy, indigenous policy, regulatory frameworks, infrastructure development, and market access. This position reports to a professor in the Energy and Environmental Policy Research Division and oversees and contributes to research focused on the decarbonization theme area at the School of Public Policy, University of Calgary.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Reviews and makes recommendations on hiring consultants and other external resources used for completing projects. Evaluates performance of these resources
  • Oversees and manages time and projects undertaken by junior researchers and external consultants
  • Develops proposed research programs in conjunction with the fund development team to secure additional funding
  • Collaborates regularly and closely with others (i.e., participation in project meetings and brainstorming sessions) as required or to conduct research, obtain and verify results
  • Organizes time effectively so that research results are produced by set deadlines that support overall project timelines
  • Participates in developing annual research plans and growth strategies for research related to energy and environmental policy, for existing and new initiatives
  • Assists in the development of multiyear strategic plans that anticipate policy changes and link research activities from year to year
  • Applies analytical skills for the collection, formatting, analysis and effective presentation of data. Includes comparing and/or validating results with established literature
  • Completes other tasks as required
  • Represents the School of Public Policy at external events, including media interviews
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Ability to independently and effectively initiate, prioritize and organize multiple projects with tight deadlines
  • A combination of experience, training and education will be considered
  • Ability to work collaboratively and interact respectfully and persuasively with a variety of internal and external contacts
  • Possesses innovative research abilities
  • Possesses knowledge of current energy and environmental policy issues, data and research, in both academic and policy literature
  • Strong analytical skills in reaching sound decisions and resolving complex problems.
  • At least five years of research experience or other experience in the fields noted above is preferred
  • Ability to mentor and direct other researchers
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Possesses knowledge of current energy and environmental policy issues, data and the frontier of research, in both academic and policy literature
  • Proficiency in relevant technical software (statistical and econometric analysis, graphics, web and data base tools etc.) in addition to Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Completion of at least a Master’s degree, in economics or science, with a specialization in one or more of resource development, energy, decarbonization, or a related field
  • Adaptable and flexible in a fastmoving and changing environment
  • Demonstrated quantitative and qualitative research skills, including technoeconomic modelling
  • Proven ability to work on a variety of issues in collaboration with researchers from a variety of academic disciplines
  • Possesses knowledge of Canadian energy and environmental systems, policy and regulation
  • Proven ability to deliver high quality academic and policyoriented publications and presentations
