Job Description

Position : Project Planner

Location : Thunder bay, Ontario Canada (Onsite)

Position Type: Fulltime/Contract (Both is fine)


Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Project Planner to join our team in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting project management activities by developing, maintaining, and controlling project schedules. This position requires in-depth expertise in project planning tools, particularly MS Projects and Primavera, and a strong background in the rail domain.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the planning and scheduling functions for EPC projects, overseeing activities related to schedule development, maintenance, control, resource planning, progress analysis, and reporting.
  • Conduct regular schedule review meetings to present updated status to senior management, ensuring transparency and alignment with project goals.
  • Collaborate with Transportation project management team to provide planning and scheduling support across all aspects of project development, management, and control.
  • Coordinate with engineering teams to prioritize design deliverables based on construction needs and timelines.
  • Participate in cost estimation and budgeting activities, ensuring accurate and timely project cost projections.
  • Evaluate project performance against plans, identifying major deviations and critical delays. Generate progress reports, Earned Value, and engineering deliverables KPI reports.
  • Develop and manage detailed production and integration engineering schedules to ensure alignment of mechanical design deliverables with procurement, tools fabrication, and rail car production requirements.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the planning team, fostering growth and development.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineering, and procurement leads to develop and maintain integrated project schedules that reflect project scope, execution strategy, milestones, and key deliverables.
  • Allocate resources effectively, monitor workloads, and create resource histograms to optimize project performance.
  • Provide analysis of project schedule performance and work progress, advising on mitigation plans and recovery strategies when needed.
  • Monitor project critical path activities and recommend recovery actions as required.


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, ensuring accurate and reliable project schedules.
  • Proven leadership experience in managing planning teams and mentoring team members.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify deviations and propose effective solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across various teams and stakeholders.
  • Local candidates based in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, are preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Project and Primavera for schedule development, analysis, and control.
  • Prior experience in the rail industry and familiarity with rail project dynamics is highly desirable.
  • 5 to 15 years of relevant experience in project planning and scheduling, preferably in the rail domain.
