Program Technician (Geospatial)

Your role
As the Program Technician (Geospatial) you’ll support our vision and values by providing support to acquire, maintain, analyze and distribute a variety of habitat and ecological data, participating in surveys and studies, writing and reviewing technical reports, and more generally providing their skillfulness to the department’s Habitat Program.

Essential Qualifications

  • A degree in geography, biology, environmental sciences, or natural resources conservation/management
  • Experience planning and implementing field-monitoring, survey, or mapping programs to support geospatial data gathering and analyses
  • Experience collecting and managing a variety of geospatial data including designing, developing and managing tabular and spatial databases
  • Experience in performing spatial analyses, designing, and creating maps using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software
  • Experience communicating technical results through report writing and data visualization is an asset
Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the above qualifications may be equally considered .
Knowledge, Skills And Suitability
To support key objectives and operational needs of this position, candidates will be assessed on the following:
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, and problem solve with peers
  • Ability to interpret and communicate study results and biological concepts to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, quality assurance, and data management
  • Ability to use a variety of GIS software and analysis programs (e.g., ArcGIS, Python, Access, R)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong knowledge of geospatial science, cartography and GIS (e.g. workflow, geoprocessing and spatial analysis tools)
  • Demonstrated initiative and time management skills
  • Ability to contribute positively to team operations and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills
The Conditions Of Employment For This Position Are
Valid Class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent) and Standard First Aid/CPR certification within 6 months of hire.
The Job Requirements For This Position Are
Lifting of heavy objects, travel within Yukon by various modes of transportation including truck, aircraft (fixed-wing and helicopter), boat, 4x4 and/or ATV, sometimes in difficult and remote field situations and in adverse weather conditions. Evenings and weekend work may be required.
