The Learning Hive is a toy store and learning centre offering private tutoring for children in Kindergarten through grade 10 and beyond. Our mission is to support our community's children of all ages with a safe, bright and encouraging space to enjoy, be supported in, and challenged at learning new skills. We exist to support learners through individualized, focused, explicit instruction in one to one tutoring sessions, study halls, group classes and workshops. Our success depends on our attention to the needs of our community and truly helping them to achieve – we don’t succeed unless our learners succeed.

We are excited to be adding to our team with a part time tutoring professional that is results driven and excellent with children. In this role you will provide one-on-one educational instruction to elementary students. Students will require support with reading, writing and/or math. Patience, positivity, empathy, active listening skills and the ability to think quickly while effectively altering plans, as needed, is of the utmost importance.

Awareness of, and experience with, structured literacy.the science of reading is an asset to this role.

Responsibilities and Duties

•Conduct one-on-one tutoring sessions for elementary-age students to improve their skills in academic subjects, namely reading, writing, and math

•Write lesson plans and/or follow previously determined lesson plans

•Identify students' individual learning needs

•Evaluate students' progress and discuss the results

Qualifications

•Bachelor’s degree (required)

•2+ years teaching experience (informal experience is acceptable)

•Ability and willingness to learn curriculum, and stay up to date on current learning theories, techniques, and resources

•Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written)

•Creative thinking skills

•Highly organized, results driven, a quick learner, and above average patience

•Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite)

Please note:

This position requires the majority of work to be completed on evenings and weekends. Schedule and compensation will be discussed during the interview process, and will be commensurate to qualifications and expert.

In addition, while homework help is occasionally a part of a tutors responsibility, the majority of the time spent with students will be spent teaching a direct, explicit, systematic and sequential lesson to support their learning goals.
