Job Description
Your Opportunity:


As a member of Smoky Lake Hospital Pharmacy Team, the Pharmacy Assistant will work with Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacists working to their full scope of practice. Under limited supervision of the Operations Manager, Pharmacy Assistants perform various medication related duties including: distribution, selection, repackaging medications, replenishment, tracking for outdated medications and perpetual inventory levels, and moderately complex clerical duties. Core duties may include, but are not limited to: transports pharmacy items to patient care areas and other departments, enters patient specific orders into profiles, repackages and labels pharmaceuticals to be checked by a Regulated healthcare professional, ordering and receiving medication inventory and supplies as per quotas. Performs tasks involving ward stock for debit and credit of inventory including narcotics distribution according to established procedures. Monitors inventory control of pharmaceuticals to minimize outdated medications. Performs routine physical cleaning and maintenance on pharmacy equipment. Preparation of reports from pharmacy systems including filing associated with all duties. Communicates unit-based issues to other pharmacy staff for resolution. Participates in hospital, departmental and/or quality assurance activities to ensure standards are maintained. Assists in training of new employees. Performs other duties deemed necessary. As a Pharmacy Assistant, you will be responsible for the packaging, distributing, shipping medications and the management and replenishment of medication inventory levels under the general supervision of Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians.

Required Qualifications:


Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.


Additional Required Qualifications:


Recent hospital pharmacy related experience, working knowledge of Pharmacy terms and medication names is an asset. Experience with Meditech (Pharmacy Modules) and Windows-based computer applications. Basic knowledge of inventory control of pharmaceuticals including minimizing outdated medications. Graduate of a recognized pharmacy assistant program and/or recent retail pharmacy experience acceptable to the employer may be considered. Must be fluent in the English language (written and verbal). Must be able to type (40 words per minute desired). Excellent communication, interpersonal and time management skills are required. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. Good organizational, problem solving and decision-making ability. Must display tact, courtesy, discretion and respect confidentiality. Must be accurate, punctual, reliable, co-operative, able to demonstrate effective service attitude, and self-motivated to consider existing processes that better serve patient care. Must be able to work both independently and co-operatively in a team environment. Must be able to adapt to new technologies and changing workflow patterns. Familiarity to operate various office equipment, unit dose packaging equipment and pharmaceutical compounding equipment. Must be in good physical condition as majority of shift involves: typing, static positions, heavy lifting, standing, crouching, bending, pushing, pulling, kneeling, walking and standing for extended periods of time.


Preferred Qualifications:


1+ yr experience in rural hospital pharmacy supporting remote sites, 1+ yr experience Meditech computer program experience including patient specific order entry. 1 yr + in Narcotics. 1 yr + experience inventory management. 6 months + experience in distribution related work including reconstitution of products and unit dose repackaging.
