Job Description
The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP)- is part of a dynamic care team that includes Neonatologists, Physician Assistants, and Neonatal Fellows. This triad works seamlessly with an extended interdisciplinary team to diagnose and treat all disorders affecting critically ill and convalescing newborns. In addition to direct clinical care, the NNP functions fully in the other domains of practice embedded in the role, including education, research, quality improvement, and leadership. The NNP is eligible for Clinical Cross Appointment with the Faculty of Nursing at McMaster University. The NNP is considered a highly respected leader and key member of the Interprofessional team at MCH. With over two decades of service, the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner team was recognized for their innovation and care with the Hospital’s distinguished Cornerstone of Care Award.


  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Critical analysis and problem-solving skills to formulate medical and nursing diagnosis
  • Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professionals Act
  • Advanced preparation at the Masters level with specialized training
  • Ability to collaborate with members of a diverse interprofessional healthcare team to provide and promote patient-centred care in a clinically complex environment
  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience in a neonatal ICU preferred
  • Current NRP Certification
  • Knowledge of family dynamics as it relates to role change with respect to the birth process crisis/stress situation and death and dying
  • Current BCLS Certification
  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class, pediatrics or primary care
  • Advanced knowledge of pre-term and full-term infant pathophysiology

Unit Summary


The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at McMaster Children’s Hospital is comprised of a Level III NICU, a Level IIc nursery and a neonatal transport team, providing medical and surgical care to neonates and their families and serving a broad geographic area within southern Ontario. The interdisciplinary team provides family-centered care with a strong focus on evidence-based best practice and continuous quality improvement. McMaster NICU is actively involved in a number of collaborative quality improvement initiatives provincially, nationally and internationally.
