Job Description

Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for a Clinician with a Master's Degree in a Health Sciences discipline to join the Mental Health & Substance Use team at Richmond Hospital in Richmond, BC. Apply today to join our team!


As a Mental Health Clinician, you will


  • Participate in program sponsored interdisciplinary research.
  • Participate in case conferences/meetings to best meet the presenting needs of the client population and to provide integration and continuity along the care continuum.
  • Participate in continuing education and/or corporate initiatives and engage in on-going team planning, development, evaluation, and quality improvement activities.
  • Provide treatments which restore and/or improve the optimal functioning of adults with mental health and/or concurrent conditions through independent mental health and substance use screening; suicide risk assessment; comprehensive holistic assessments; care planning; short term care coordination; treatment and intervention through group therapy, individual therapy and referral.
  • Work within an interdisciplinary team and as part of a broader integrated system to deliver services to clients experiencing mental health and/or concurrent conditions.
  • Establish and maintain non-judgmental therapeutic relationships with clients and family, collaborate and consult with colleagues and other community resources.
  • Use a variety of theoretical models reflective of best practice and current evidence.


Education & Experience


  • Three (3) years’ recent related experience providing professional services to individuals who have severe acute mental health and substance use conditions, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License as required. Local area travel may require the use of a personal vehicle.
  • Master’s degree in a Health Sciences Discipline from a recognized program.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


  • Demonstrated listening and information seeking skills to promote communication and leading to a collaborative approach to problem solving within a client & family centered, multi/interdisciplinary setting.
  • Demonstrated implementation of therapeutic elements of group process.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to meet organizational goals within the vision and mission of the organization.
  • Broad knowledge of psychopharmacology.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete a mental health assessment, case formulation and, collaboratively with the client and family, create a treatment/wellness plan that identifies goals and expected outcomes for recovery from the presenting issues.
  • Competent computer literacy to operate a computerized client care information system and word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, Internet and e-mail software.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and respond to rapidly changing and pressure situations.
  • Broad knowledge of legislation, government policies and procedures that relate to the client.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mental health and substance abuse disorders and their interaction.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of psychotherapeutic and counselling skills.
  • Broad knowledge of the DSM V diagnostic classification system and case formulation.
  • Broad knowledge of other health disciplines and their role in health care.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a variety of theoretical models to practice in assessment and intervention.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with clients, family, colleagues, referral sources, medical personnel, and community agency personnel.
  • Skilled in the use of equipment, and in the techniques established for treatment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and facilitate the development of an integrated system of mental health and addiction services, including working with mental health and addiction services and other related professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events.
  • Demonstrated ability to gather relevant information to make a holistic, multi-dimensional mental health and substance misuse assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a recovery oriented model of care.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of bio-psycho-social-spiritual issues that may occur in response to changing mental health and alcohol and/or other drug needs.


The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.


As per the current Public Health Orders (Long Term Care/Seniors Assisted Living Provincial Health Officer Order and the Health Sector Order), as of October 26, 2021, all employees working for Vancouver Coastal Health must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Proof of vaccination status will be required.
