Position Overview


The Novelis Kingston, ON team is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer. The ideal candidate will be responsible for handling many aspects of the mechanical maintenance function by identifying and problem-solving all mechanical issues. This position is responsible for the development, installation and commissioning of capital and expense projects to be undertaken in support of reliability, EHS, efficiency and product development initiatives. The Mechanical Engineer will analyze, recommend, and construct design changes and improvements for a vast array of mechanical equipment.

Responsibilities


Responsibilities & Qualifications


  • Prepare and present capital expenditure requests, including sound financial analysis/justification, for management approval
  • Develop SOPs and training programs on processes and equipment for tradespeople and operators
  • Work with external resources to facilitate contractor management, build vendor relations and connect with engineering firms
  • Be a role model within the Kingston team by demonstrating Novelis policies, procedures, and absolutes to contribute to a safe working environment
  • Compare alternatives and recommend cost effective solutions for productivity, cost, quality, reliability, safety, and environmental improvements
  • Apply principles of continuous improvement on a routine basis to improve Asset Effectiveness metrics
  • Advocate for short- and long-term Capital Projects to align with the company’s business plan and to deliver results for all stakeholders
  • Supports and leads root cause analyses using 5-Why, Cause Maps, etc.
  • Be available as needed to support operations at a 24/7 facility
  • Provide technical support to a team of unionized tradespeople and operators to trouble shoot, tackle preventive maintenance and engineering problems
  • Responsible for project engineering and management of capital and maintenance projects


Required Qualifications


  • Proven experience with machinery design, machinery fabrication and process design
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, P.Eng, or equivalent preferred
  • Ability to lead and be responsible for contractors
  • Demonstrated excellent leadership skills through past experiences
  • Proficient in Computer Software such as Microsoft Office, Solid Works, SAP and AutoCAD
  • Ability to write specifications and facilitate bids from contractors and suppliers
  • Fundamental knowledge of Solid Works and AutoCAD, with the ability to make minor changes to drawings
  • Proficient in the fundamentals of reliability such that the position can help establish appropriate PM’s and PdM’s for process equipment
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to allow for fluid interaction with contractors, customers, employees, and government regulatory agencies at all levels
  • A strong understanding of maintenance theory and principles of equipment reliability
  • 5+ years of work experience in a field of mechanical engineering
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively work with different levels of the organization
  • Proficient in advanced engineering and diagnostic tools such as vibrations analysis, lubrication analysis, etc.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform root-cause-analysis on equipment and process issues, specifically in the mechanical area
