Our Toronto office is currently seeking a Litigation Law Clerk to join our Advocacy practice, reporting to the Manager, Discovery Services. The ideal candidate will be an organized and proactive professional who understands the importance of excellent client service and a strong work ethic. This role involves traditional law clerk responsibilities, with a focus on e-discovery, and an aim to building skills and experience to manage litigation matters from inception to trial. This is an exciting opportunity for someone a passion for electronic evidence with a strong interest in building their technical skills, to join an incredible team!
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Draft legal documents, as necessary, which may include pleadings, pre-trial conference memos, mediation briefs, motion records, affidavits, etc.
- Engage in correspondence with legal team and clients, interfacing with legal teams and clients directly
- Assist with the management of evidence including the identification, preservation and collection of documents, and managing the review, production and presentation of evidence
- Assist with trial preparation including, organizing and preparing trial exhibits, trial notebooks and binders, scheduling, coordinating and communicating with clients, experts and fact witnesses
- Summarize discovery transcripts and preparing lists of undertakings and refusals and management of answers
- Perform law clerk responsibilities from file opening to closing, with a focus on e-discovery
- Assist with the preparation of project plans and budgets
- Assist with the drafting of costs outlines and bill of costs
- Assist with the preparation of hearings including examinations for discovery, mediations, arbitrations, motions, etc.
The successful candidate must have the following education, experience and/or demonstrated skills:
- Some knowledge of e-discovery best practices, procedures, and technology
- Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) to manage clients, and all levels of lawyers and legal professionals
- Law Clerk certification from an accredited institute or commensurate experience
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Confident and dependable, with strong initiative and ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented atmosphere
- 1 to 2 years experience working as a law clerk or e-discovery practitioner in a law firm
- Excellent critical thinking skills and problem-solving skills
- Some experience with e-discovery databases such as Ipro Eclipse or Relativity would be an asset
- Computer literate with working knowledge of legal software and standard software
- Some experience with large document management matters in an electronic format
- Excellent time management skills and prioritization skills
