Job Description
The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is Canada’s leading addiction and mental health teaching hospital. As CAMH’s Legal Counsel (Corporate), you will provide legal support to CAMH‘s VP and Chief Legal and Risk Officer in overseeing the provision of legal support to CAMH’s operations and supporting CAMH’s role as a corporate partner and leader in healthcare.
CAMH is currently seeking a full time, permanent Legal Counsel (Corporate). In this role, you will be part of a dynamic legal team providing legal advice to the leadership, physicians and staff of CAMH to identify and mitigate risk to CAMH, while advancing corporate goals and initiatives. You will report to CAMH’s VP, Legal and Chief Legal and Risk Officer and provide practical and exceptional legal services in areas including, but not limited to, corporate/commercial law, leasing, procurement, privacy law, health law, hospital governance and legislative compliance. A solutions-oriented lawyer focused on proactively identifying risk and advancing CAMH’s corporate strategies, as corporate legal counsel you will develop and maintain strong working relationships with CAMH’s internal stakeholders, external peer hospital counsel, and external legal counsel.
Qualifications
  • You must possess an LLB or JD and be a lawyer in good standing with the LSO
  • You are a service-oriented lawyer with strong conceptual thinking and decision-making skills, who is capable of managing a high volume of competing priorities appropriately and effectively.
  • The ideal candidate have at least 5 years of post-call experience in private practice, in-house, or a combination thereof.
  • Your communication skills must be excellent (oral and written) and you must have strong interpersonal, negotiation and presentation skills. Excellent judgment, tact and diplomacy are essential to this role.
  • You should have solid experience in general corporate/commercial law and contract drafting and negotiation.
  • You are able to work both independently and collaboratively as a team member.
  • Strong preference will be given to lawyers who have expertise in the areas of Health, Privacy, IT, and/or Public Procurement law.
  • Experience working within a hospital or broader healthcare sector organization is an asset.
