Position Overview:


Reporting to the Project Architect, or Program Manager the Intern Architect helps research and prepare architectural drawings using special drafting software. Intern Architects are key members of the design team. As such the Intern Architect will play a vital role in turning the design ideas of architects and engineers into practical, workable buildings. They may also research building codes, test building materials for suitability, calculate cost estimates, building models based on architects’ designs, and oversee construction projects by monitoring and reviewing the work of builders. They may also research building codes, test building materials for suitability, calculate cost estimates, building models based on architects’ designs, and oversee construction projects by monitoring and reviewing the work of builders.


Duties and Responsibilities:


The Intern Architect works in conjunction with other team members, consultants and Clients performing a variety of technical and coordination functions, tasks and assignments that typically include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:
  • Develop, manage, and coordinate technical documents to ensure accuracy and consistency, including but not limited to 3D architectural renderings, contract documents and other technical documents or schedules and reports.
  • Assist Project Manager in construction administration duties by attending site visits as required and preparing administrative documents including but not limited to Record of Revisions, Contemplated Change Orders, Change Orders, Requests for Information and Shop Drawing Logs.
  • Research various building codes and by-laws as they apply to each project.
  • Complete building permit and other municipal applications.
  • Adherence to corporate standards and policies, including project goals of excellence in design, execution, and sustainability.
  • Conduct site visits to complete surveys or review, collect information and report to team.
  • Assist in maintaining quality control by reviewing architectural drawings and documents completed by others (including internal and external team members and partners).
  • Develop detail sketches generated by project lead. Assist the Project Manager:
  • Develop and maintain project schedules and targets.
  • Ensure Clients' expectations are met in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Assist the team in identifying and resolving challenges and issues that may arise.
  • Clients, trades, and suppliers as directed by the Project Manager.
  • Liaise and manage communications directly with:
  • Contractors and consultants throughout design and constructions phases
  • Keep the Project Manager and others informed of project status and issues that may impact client relations.
  • Manage and coordinate other team members and project-related deadlines and schedules, tracking project progress using project scheduling and control tools to monitor projects plans, work hours, budgets, and expenditures.
  • Review and coordinate shop drawings.
  • Municipal authorities to conduct research and compile data regarding by-laws, municipal restrictions, submissions, and other regulatory requirements.


Skills and Qualifications:


  • Understanding of BIM and Revit architecture.
  • Graduate with a professional degree/diploma in architecture from an accredited post-secondary institution or have successfully completed the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) Syllabus Program.
  • Ability to communicate design/construction intent via computer-generated sketches or hand drawings.
  • Understanding of the related construction process.
  • A computer-literate performer with extensive proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator), Sketch-up, Microsoft Office Suite, PowerPoint, and other software as may be required to perform duties. Knowledge of Rhino and rendering with Vray is an asset.
  • Member of an accredited Professional Association.
  • Experience within Residential, Commercial, Hospitality and Retail is an asset.
  • Familiarity with Building Materials and Construction Methods and detailing.
  • 1 to 3 years of Canadian experience working in an architectural office.
  • Familiarity with Canadian building codes (including OBC, ABC, BCBC, NBC, QBC, MBC and VBBL).
  • Has received certification of academic qualification from the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB).
  • LEED accreditation is an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience preparing permit, bid, and construction documents.
  • Understanding of related engineering disciplines, including planning, civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical disciplines and how they integrate and affect and support the architectural scope.
