KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


The duties of the Control and Instrument Technician are as follows, but not limited to:
  • Maintains effective working relationships and communications with peers, management, and other Company departments and staff. Effectively resolves any conflicts in a timely and respectful manner to achieve positive and healthy working relationships and workplace environment.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
  • Testing, maintaining and modifying existing systems
  • Reviews alarm printouts and identify discrepancies, reporting these to Tech. Services manager and opertions.
  • Liaises between shifts to confirm that control and instrument related knowledge is shared and understood in the field.
  • Initiates process and instrument changes throughout the plant.
  • Acts as a resource to the plant for co-ordination of improvement opportunities and support during implementation of control and instrument process improvements.
  • Actively works to optimize the control, instrument and process to improve the plant efficiency.
  • Providing advice and consultancy support to engineering manager and operations.
  • Recommends facility improvements in instruments in response to wastes that are difficult to handle.
  • Promotes a quality-first work ethic and attitude to provide a service is of the highest standard achievable.
  • Provides support and resource to other instrument technician for:
  • Evaluates and recommend control & instruments for wastes as potential candidates for incineration based on process design.
  • Analysing data and presenting findings in written reports
  • Preparing equipment specification and data sheet and put requisition to purchase equipment’s.
  • Evaluating/improving proposed control strategies with Engineering Department.
  • Supports other initiatives of the Plant to promote a healthy and positive work environment and enhance employee morale and engagement.
  • Writing computer software and test procedures
  • Developing new business proposals.
  • Designing and developing new control systems
  • Managing operations of existing system
  • Liaising with clients, suppliers, contractors and relevant authorities
  • Participates in approving, sponsoring, and initiating Management of Change (MOC).
  • Safely operates company owned, leased, or rented vehicles and/or mobile equipment. Incumbent is required to perform Safety Sensitive duties and responsibilities.
  • Working collaboratively with other engineers, operation engineers, purchasers and other internal staff
  • Interfaces with operations, sales and Marketing to develop new control and instrument strategy if require
  • Assists to support maintenance during major outages, in planning engineering project implementation to provide minimal disruption to operations during regular production periods and assists with and oversees capital projects as assigned.
  • Proactively promotes through example a safe work ethic, attitude, and workplace. Complies with all health and safety policies, standards, and procedures to achieve a safe work environment and safety for all staff and visitors as well as the Company’s, Client’s and Regulatory Agencies safe work objectives and requirements.
  • Modify and maintaining Bailey logic and updating of logic diagrams.
  • Project management within cost and time constrained environments
  • Conducts focused studies of control and instrument operations to improve performance
  • Understands and promotes the Company’s, the Division’s, the Plant’s, and the Department’s mission statement, values, and strategic goals.
  • Maintains confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures.
  • Participates in Process Hazard Assessment (PHA), REM and HAZOP associated with plant control, instrument operations.
  • Provides technical support to Engineering as required in design and charter preparation.
  • Understanding and ensuring compliance with relevant health and safety regulations and quality standards
  • Upgrading alarm logic and control set points.
  • Updating and maintaining current loop descriptions.
  • Provides technical expertise where required to define necessary control, instrument and process change, including agreement between shifts prior to MOC submission.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND TALENTS


  • Proven organizational and creative-problem solving skills.
  • Strong customer service attitude and commitment to providing exceptional customer service and quality results.
  • Ability to work on-call and outside of regular business hours as the facility is operational 24/7.
  • Ability to complete all conditions of employment including criminal record check, negative alcohol and drug test, current and clean Class 5 driver’s license, pre-employment medical, and background check.
  • Good background in control, instrument and process operations.
  • Effective time management, decision-making, and planning and organizing skills.
  • Knowledge of advanced process control (APC), distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and security system
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to facilitate and promote open discussions and understanding.
  • In-house training on Corporate policies and in-house Respectful Workplace Training.
  • In-house training on the quality systems, regulations, and safe work practices (including WHMIS, TDG, Waste Storage Guidelines, CPR, First Aid, and Environmental Awareness)
  • Preference for 3 to 4 years’ related experience.
  • Attentiveness to details and ability to manage a diverse workload within a fast-paced environment with changing multiple priorities and frequent interruptions.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ related industrial/ residential process experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict management skills to facilitate working effectively with wide range and number of people, including peers and manager, employees, and other departments, divisions, and management within all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team as well as independently with minimal supervision.
  • Good troubleshooting skills.
  • Stronge computer skills to operate DCS, PLC and MS Office Suite (especially Outlook, Excel, and Word).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures.
  • Excellent negotiation, persuasion, and listening skills to facilitate successful resolution of employee and management concerns and requests.
  • Electrical Engineering or control engineering or combination of demonstrated engineering experience, aptitude, and specific skills training.


WORKING ENVIRONMENT


Challenging conditions normally associated with job (e.g. physical hazards, rotating shifts, shop conditions, and travel as an integral part of the duties performed, etc.) It is assumed that all reasonable and legal Occupational Health & Safety practices are in place and are adhered to. In addition, PPE is to be worn as per company standards and procedures. Refer to the safety section and safe work plan sections of procedures for specific information. Refer to the position’s Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) for the correlation or activity, risk, and controls.


  • May be exposed to hot and cold working environments.
  • Frequent trips into production plant, fields and laboratory; may be required to climb ladders, work at heights or in confined spaces, and be exposed to various industrial hazards such as but not limited to noise, fumes, and chemicals and hazardous waste.
  • May be required to wear respirator and/or breathing apparatus while in the plant and/or laboratory.
  • Despite the relatively low risk of exposure to potential waste contaminants, participation in the SHTC employee health monitoring program is required.
  • May be exposed to PCBs, Compressed/flammable gas, mobile equipment, moving equipment, rotating equipment, slip/trip/fall and electrical hazards.


WORKING HOURS


General hours of work for the Control and Instrument technician will be four (4) days per week, ten hours per day, Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday ; however incumbent is required to work hours necessary to achieve Department and Company/Client objectives. With prior approval, incumbent has flexibility to adapt hours to meet business and personal needs. Position is based on a 40-hour work week.
