Position Summary
This is a hybrid position located in Victoria. BC.
Thales is looking for a Test and Trial Engineer who is responsible for establishing a Verification & Validation Program for various classes of vessel operated by the Royal Canadian Navy. The program will include the In-Service Test and Trials Programs all classes.
In this position, you will support Engineering Work Pack managers to ensure Test & Trials Plans are developed, accepted and implemented for Engineering Changes, and Mission Fits, as well as Preventive and Corrective Maintenance activities as required. You will also be involved in the Design Intent management for each class of vessel.
Key Areas of Responsibility
  • Produce V&V reports and make recommendations to the Life Cycle Materiel Management and Engineering team for modification to the Technical Data Package and Configuration Management Data.
  • Co-ordinate, plan, organize, lead and control V&V activities within delegated authorities and responsibilities.
  • Resolve technical problems and deficiencies.
  • Identify and manage system requirements to support verification and validation (V&V) activities.
  • Observe and study system / equipment functioning, operating modes and performance results.
  • Develop and manage the In-Service Trial Agenda (ISTA) program for various classes of Royal Canadian Navy vessel aligned with DND policy and procedures.
  • Conduct post-trial data analysis.
  • Provide Engineering and Technical support to the Thales In-Service Support section including DND Technical Authorities
  • Ensure that work is carried out in accordance with task requirements and/or the design and build characteristics of the vessels.
  • Support customer operations, anticipate operational problems and contribute to improve the system / equipment operation.
  • Prepare Engineering reports.
  • Provide engineering and technical support to the AJISS Enterprise via technical investigations.
  • Develop test procedures to demonstrate system capability and compliance with Classification Society and DND regulations.
  • Work with the Thales Engineering and Service Delivery teams to commission systems and equipment following preventative and corrective maintenance.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic, Naval Architecture or equivalent.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (PENG) in British Columbia, Canada.
  • 5 years' experience developing or executing Verification & Verification programs or Test & Trials programs.
  • Language: English (Essential).
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5 years' experience in a marine or related environment.
  • Experience with requirements management using Rational DOORS.
  • Project Management.
  • Previous experience working with a defense contract.
  • Experience in commissioning new build vessels or new marine systems.
Physical Demands
  • Mix of office work, work in dockyards, and onboard Naval Ships.
  • Will be required to undertake inspections in machinery spaces of Naval ships involving bending and twisting.
  • Willing to work aloft and in confined spaces on board ships (training to be provided).
Regulatory Compliance Requirements
  • Requires a positive Controlled Goods assessment as you will have direct access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program.
  • Requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Export Control List, the ITAR or the EAR.
  • Required to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance at the NATO Secret Level.
Special Position Requirements
  • Schedule: 40 hours per week.
  • Travel: Occasional domestic or international travel maybe required in support of the ships or Thales In-Service Support division.
  • Physical Environment: Office or on-board ships alongside in harbour or at sea.
  • Work Location: Hybrid: Will be required to work from the Esquimalt dockyard (about 50% of the time) and home/Thales office in Malahat (about 50%).
