Job Description

Reporting to the Supervisor of Health & Wellness Program, this position is responsible to support the Service with the administration of the occupational health and safety portfolios, which includes monitoring WSIB trends, injury intervention and prevention. This position supports the proactive development of activities, directives for health and safety issues and assists with ensuring compliance with relevant legislation in order to provide a safe and healthy workplace for members and to maintain legal and regulatory compliance.


Responsibilities

• Develops and maintains the Health and Safety programs to ensure compliance with relevant

legislation and reduce Service's liability and ensure workers' safety.

• Recommends and develops changes to Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) policies, programs and

procedures.

• Implements changes to programs, policy, procedures based on Health and Safety legislation.

• Authors annual proposals relating to health and safety; upon approval, develops and facilitates

customized health and safety educational programs.

• Coordinates legislated safety-training programs through consultation with subject matter experts.

• Participates in the review of internal injury reports to identify trends and make recommendations to

control hazards specific to the work environment to reduce injuries and associated cost.

• Manages worksite and program audits of health and safety.

• Researches and reports on new Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) changes to senior level

management.

• Provides input into long term planning initiatives with the Health and Wellness team.

• Provide support to leaders, members and committees on various health and safety issues.

• Liaises with the Ministry of Labour (MOL) in regards to inspections, responding to orders and

preparing in-depth reports.

• Participates in the review of internal reporting accuracy to perform basic and root cause problem

analysis on incidents/accidents.

• Acts as the subject matter expert in regards to health and safety practices; researches and provides

recommendations for organizational implementation.

• Reviews workplace injury reports for medical treatments, lost time, frequency and severity statistics,

and nature of injuries; make recommendations on prevention in collaboration with the Wellness Unit.

• Researches best practices and new trends in health and safety; authors formal recommendations for

consideration.

• Liaise with internal members, Association, the Region, other police services and external agencies.

• Participates in risk assessments for internal initiatives and workplaces as well as pandemic planning.

• Other duties, projects, as assigned (individual or group responsibilities).


Qualifications

• Completion of a 3-year college diploma OR Graduate Certificate in Human Resources, Health &

Wellness or a related field of study.

• Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) certificate is required.

• Minimum 2 years' experience in health and safety management including the administration of the

occupational health and safety, monitoring/reporting on WSIB trends, injury intervention and

prevention.

• Experience in the development of educational initiatives for health and safety issues and ensuring

compliance with relevant legislation in order to maintain legal and regulatory compliance.

• Intermediate computer competency with Microsoft Office 365 (Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint,

Outlook, OneDrive).

• Ability to communicate and interact diplomatically, tactfully and confidentially with individuals at all

levels of the organization as well as external agencies.

• Guide others through training and explanation of specialized matters.

• Coordinate and secure cooperation with multiple persons/groups; ability to overcome resistance with

reluctant individuals.

• Ability to research and gather data to produce specialized reports.

• Well-developed time management, prioritization, multi-tasking and organizational skills.

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team as well as the ability to work efficiently

with self-direction.

• Working knowledge of a Human Resources Information System (HRIS) and familiarity with Power BI

will be considered an asset.

• Previous experience with the Parklane system will be considered an asset.
