POSITION TITLE: Garden Attendant (CCG)

NUMBER OF POSITIONS BEING FILLED: 2

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Routine grass cutting, mulching, raking and trimming using power equipment such as weed whippers, lawn mowers and gardening tools
• Emptying garbage containers, turning over compost piles, and collecting litter, as needed
• Answering questions and provide helpful information to visitors, as required
• Reporting task progress as well as damage or repairs needed to Supervisor (CCG Coordinator)
• Maintain a thorough knowledge of CCG facilities, features and activities
• Maintaining and adding to various garden beds, including the pollinator keyhole garden, butterfly meadow, and occasional assistance with native plant seed collection
• Routine light maintenance of grass cutting and other equipment (monitoring electrical batteries, etc.)
• Regular maintenance of Campus Community Garden grounds, facilities, garden beds, trails and parking area
• Performs other job-related duties and responsibilities consistent with the position as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Per the University of Windsor Ignite Work Study Program, this position is open to UWindsor students who meet the following requirements:

• Good academic standing (cumulative average of 60% or higher and not be on academic probation)
• Registered in a minimum course load (60% for domestic; 80% for international; 40% for students with a documented permanent disability)
• Possess a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) and are legally entitled to work in Canada. International students must have a fully approved study permit as well as a valid SIN
• Not in a co-op work term in the semester they are employed in an Ignite position

• Able to undertake a task with minimum supervision and diligently follow-up with the CCG Coordinator
• Experience with operating landscaping equipment, garden tools, and power equipment is considered an asset
• A team player with a positive attitude and the ability to multitask, set priorities, and be resourceful
• Previous landscaping, horticulture, or experience in environmental field

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Moderate to heavy lifting (50 lbs) and ability to perform physically demanding tasks is required
• Job Duration: September 15th through December 21st, 2023
• Position is weather-dependent and hours based on-demand, typically between 4-10 hours per week and flexibility to work around various weather conditions and events. Weekly consultation meetings with CCG Coordinator typically occur on weekday evenings or weekends.
• Attendant must provide own clothing, shoes, rain gear, and other items needed for outdoor weather conditions
• Wage Rate: $15.50/hour
• Environmental Conditions: Regular outdoor work is required with prolonged standing, walking, negotiation of obstacles, and bending or stooping. Carrying equipment and occasional heavy lifting up to 50 lbs required. Exposure to inclement weather, heat and cold, biting insects and hazardous plants.
• Hazards & Risks: Exposure to a variety of household cleaning products that may cause eye/skin/respiratory irritation and allergens. Biological hazards that may include infectious pathogens, bacteria, fungi, or mould from insects, birds, plants, animals, and humans. Ergonomic hazards with bending, lifting, reaching, etc.
