Opportunity
- Overseeing the daily workflow of financial transactions and processes of administrative and financial staff under your client portfolio;
- Serving as a finance subject matter expert and knowledge resource, providing consultation, guidance and advice for leadership, faculty, and staff;
- Scheduling, planning, developing, and coordinating the period-end processes and procedures within the timelines set forth by the Director of Budget & Resource Planning;
- Acting as a liaison with the Finance & Budget Manager and the central Finance department to ensure alignment with divisional and institutional initiatives and processes, risk management, and legislative compliance, as well as University policies and procedures;
- Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, forecasts, projections and variance analyses;
- Planning, developing, and coordinating all long-term planning budgetary and financial functions, including identification of opportunities to reduce costs and mitigate risk;
- Monitoring revenues and expenses on an ongoing basis, comparing actual and future commitments to budget, identifying any discrepancies, and taking corrective action as needed;
- Planning, developing, and overseeing the preparation of the client’s annual budget and long-range plan, staffing plans and financial forecasts based on strategic objectives, targets, enrolment projections, and staffing requirements, in collaboration with leadership;
- Examining, analyzing, and interpreting complex financial data, making recommendations to enhance reliability and dependability of information used in financial statements, and anticipating audit requirements, ensuring adequate and pertinent documentation is obtained to support these requirements;
- Supporting your client portfolio’s leadership with their financial planning and reporting needs, including application of university financial policies and procedures;
- Identifying, recommending, and implementing required modifications to financial controls, policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure compliance with applicable legislation, production of timely and accurate financial information, and a high degree of financial accountability and control;
- Collaborating and developing effective relationships with individuals in governing and research funding agencies to remain current on existing reporting standards, and to contribute to the development of analytics and reporting to meet multiple and competing objectives.
- Assisting with systems projects to ensure that the financial accounting systems meet the needs of the institution and provide the information required for financial reporting purposes and budget monitoring; and
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to adapt to changing priorities;
- A demonstrated ability to problem-solve, assess situations, think critically, and apply good judgment in providing sound advice and recommendations;
- Systems thinking with a proven ability to see the big picture;
- Comprehensive knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting and budgeting;
- An ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion and tact.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex subject matter;
- An ability to work independently as well as within a broader team;
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and in data analytics; and
- An ability to lead and encourage collaboration;
- Strong analytical skills with a keen attention to detail;
- Experience in comprehensive budgeting, financial analysis, and reporting, including preparing financial statements, forecasting and modeling, and performing cost/benefit analysis.
- A CPA designation or working toward a designation would be considered an asset.
- Equivalences may be considered.
- Previous post-secondary experience would be considered an asset.
- A minimum of 5 years of related progressively responsible finance and accounting experience.
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline.
