Job Description

Position Title: Intermediate Engineer – Energy and Environmental Solutions Project Engineer


Job Type: Full or part-time contract position

Location: Alberta – home office based

Rate: $50-$70/hour

Greenplanet Energy Analytics works with clients who are serious about taking practical steps to reduce the cost and environmental footprint of the energy they use. We are change agents with a track record for delivering cost-effective climate action projects and building capacity with our First Nations clients.

As an Intermediate Engineer / Energy and Environmental Solutions Engineer on the Greenplanet team, you will assess energy use in existing buildings and operational systems, research and recommend energy conservation measures, and conduct modelling and analysis to quantify the costs and benefits to support informed client decisions. You will also provide input to overall business case development and funding applications. You will have the opportunity to work on a broad range of projects – from residential retrofits to commercial building design to utility scale renewable energy projects.

Our team consists of experienced professionals with a broad range of technical and business expertise, enhanced by a network of associates with deep experience in specific technologies and industries that are of interest to our clients. We operate in a fast-paced, dynamic project environment, where you will interact daily with people at all levels of the Greenplanet organization.

Our projects garner a lot of attention from the sustainability industry, and as a key member of our team you will have the opportunity to prepare and deliver presentations to industry and client groups. We also have a significant focus on education, and you will be involved in developing educational materials for a wide range of audiences.

Primary Responsibilities

Modelling, Analysis, and Design:

·Develop energy models for buildings, communities, and energy production facilities,

·Conduct lifecycle analysis of commercial and industrial processes to quantify energy use and associated GHG emissions,

·Work directly with clients, their staff, and building occupants to understand their energy use, quantify associated economic and environmental benefits, and to develop specific recommendations and business cases for energy efficiency upgrades.

·Develop economic models to support cost-benefit analysis and business case development for energy efficiency projects and sustainable development opportunities,

·Prepare technical reports for audiences of varying levels of technical knowledge and experience,

·Assist in the design of energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainable development projects, and lead in the project design and documentation process using design software,


Project Development and Management:

·Support business development with new and existing clients through proactive relationship management, networking, written and verbal proposals, developing and maintaining marketing materials such as PowerPoint decks and case studies.

·Support the development of project proposals that clearly define scope and approach, work plan and budget to facilitate client approval, and to support project funding applications

·Support the identification and validation of contractors for client projects. Support preparation of Requests for Quote and technical assessment of responses. Coordinate with vendors and contractors for resources and project completion. Provide operational and construction support throughout the project.

·Prepare and submit funding applications to support projects.Where required, adjust project scope and approach to align with funding parameters.

·Build capacity in our clients by openly engaging with them at all stages of project development and delivery. Communicate with clients and community members about project goals, principles, and activities to maintain understanding and support for the project, as well as status updates and project needs.

·Manage project execution following accepted project management practices. Work collaboratively with Greenplanet leaders to ensure all stakeholders are continuously aware of project status and issues.

·Comply with industry standards for renewable energy sources, solar installations, sustainable food systems, etc.

·Ensure that the scope of work is complete on all project plans and documentation.


Research and Education:

·Develop presentations and educational materials for various audiences,

·Work individually and as part of a team to develop and oversee training for clients, community members and technology operators or owners.

·Research and track funding opportunities appropriate for client projects

·Research alternative/renewable energy, and energy efficiency technologies and determine their technical feasibility, best use, and cost-effectiveness.

·Participate in related conferences and knowledge sharing events to build knowledge around most innovative and current practices, as well as emerging opportunities.

·Follow and promote compliance and safety.

·Other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

·Bachelor’s degree in engineering,

·A minimum of five years of experience in energy conservation, sustainability, renewable energy, deep energy retrofits, energy management, energy efficient building design, or related fields,

·Experience conducting building condition assessments or energy audits would be an asset,

·Experience managing capital projects in commercial or residential construction would be an asset,

·Proficiency in the use of Excel to develop mathematical models is essential, with experience developing complex energy and economic models in Excel an asset,

·Experience with other energy modelling software tools is an asset,

·Knowledge of energy efficient building design, energy conservation principles, building management and facilities maintenance.

·Strong Microsoft computer skills (MSWord, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

·Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

·Ability to work independently and as a team member.

·Experience working with Indigenous and remote/rural communities is an asset.

·Class 5 Drivers License.

Work Conditions

·Primarily working in home office, with flexible work hours

·Travel to client locations up to 25% of the time (can include remote northern communities)
