Job Summary
UBC Aquatic Centre custodial staff carrying out cleaning and service work in the UBC Aquatic Centre. Custodial staff are required to observe safe working conditions and habits. The incumbent works from oral and written instructions, schedules, and specific requirements which will be of a daily and periodic nature. Work is performed following safe work procedures and in close proximity to patrons during facility operating hours.
The Aquatic Centre is open from early morning to late evening seven days a week. Custodial shifts include daytime and evening shifts on weekdays and weekends.
Organizational Status
Athletics & Recreation (A&R) is a department within the VP Students portfolio, with a strong focus on creating an exceptional UBC student experience. The A&R Department has a team of approximately 100 employees, and is led by a strong cross-unit management team. It services over 60,000 students through recreational programming, 25 varsity teams, 17 competitive club teams, along with thousands of members of the UBC community.
Work Performed
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs including such tasks as unplugging toilets, hammering in nails, hanging pictures, drapes and blinds, oiling hinges and locks, changing light bulbs, tightening screws on fixtures, minor furniture repairs and adjustments, replacing door stops, adjusting door closures, removing broken glass from windows, removing and cleaning light fixtures, changing broken switch and wall plug covers etc.
  • Attends to guest requests and their needs as appropriate.
  • Cleans up spillages and spot washes and disinfects floor surfaces where spillages occur or as requested.
  • Collects garbage and waste, empties waste receptacles and deposits in containers or at pick up points.
  • Maintains adequate level of cleaning supplies and equipment according to instructions and work assigned; requests and receives materials and equipment as needed and ensures relevant equipment is in good operating condition.
  • Submits reports regarding maintenance or repairs needed to buildings and utilities and report signs of failure or abuse of fixtures and furnishings.
  • Sweeps and cleans sidewalks and related outdoor areas and clears snow when required.
  • Reports any unusual circumstances related to building security; ensures that doors and windows are properly secured, assists in emergencies such as evacuation of persons from buildings, etc., as directed.
  • Dusts, sweeps, mops, washes, vacuums, strips, polishes, shampoos, disinfects and scrubs, as applicable, all surfaces of floors, walls, fixtures, furniture and appliances in various areas of buildings, operating light or heavy duty hand or power operated cleaning equipment in the performance of duties, as required.
  • Cleans the interior and exterior of windows, other glass surfaces and shades. Replenishes materials, such as toilet paper, soap in dispensers, paper towels and sanitary products according to need.
  • Carries out any other related duties and necessary in keeping with the requirements and qualifications for the job.
  • Move objects weighing 50 pounds or more long distances (more than 20 feet). May be required to re-arrange, move and set up furniture or equipment.
  • Carries out cleaning and service work in such areas as main entrance lobby, office areas, boardroom, all washrooms, shower rooms, change rooms, pool deck and adjacent areas (guard room, wet class room, on deck offices), viewing area, mezzanine, hallways and other designated areas.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Failure to follow directions or make inappropriate decisions may result in unsafe facility conditions, poor customer service and/or unsatisfactory job performance.
Supervision Received
Aquatic Centre custodians work under the general supervision from the Head Aquatic Centre Custodian and receives oral and written instructions in accordance with standard procedures. Custodian staff can expect to receive specific instructions only on new or unusual problems. Staff are expected to develop appropriate work procedures within established work regime.
Direction may be received from Aquatic Centre staff, Lifeguards or Pool Operators to remedy specific conditions necessary for hygienic operation of the Aquatic environment.
May receive specific instructions on new or unusual problems from Head Custodian, Administrative Staff, Aquatic Centre Management Staff, Lifeguards or Pool Operators.
Supervision Given
None.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of Grade 10. 1 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Preferred experience in institutional janitorial work or hotel experience.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements involving considerable walking, climbing and manual work.

  • Ability to follow policies, procedures, instructions and to adopt new methods and practices.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships.
  • General knowledge of cleaning rules and regulations, security and safety policies and procedures.
  • Able to communicate in English effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous, patient manner.
  • Ability to move and lift objects weighing 50 pounds or more long distances (more than 20 feet).
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check – Vulnerable Sector.
