About the role:
The Compliance team within the Corporate Secretary’s Department has diverse responsibilities overseeing the management of regulatory compliance and governance matters related to the publicly traded parent company, Sun Life Financial Inc., its major operating subsidiary, Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada, and their Canadian subsidiaries, partnering with cross-functional stakeholders.
The Compliance Law Clerk will report to the Director, Corporate Governance, Risk & Compliance in the Compliance team. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate strong initiative, positive energy, and the ability to exercise sound judgment and flexibility, be an innovative thinker with excellent organizational and time management skills and the ability to cope calmly and professionally with multiple demands in a high energy and changing collaborative work environment.
Main accountabilities include non-financial regulatory compliance filings and related due diligence research, maintaining internal reporting procedures and company records, and participating in project work.
What will you do?
  • Develop compliance processes and workflows with the Compliance team and in collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders as needed
  • Maintain records for these companies, including information in the entity management database and signing authorities
  • Process invoices and payments to sustain registrations and retain services required
  • Provide assistance to the Board Governance, Subsidiary Governance and Shareholder Services teams as required
  • Manage group mailboxes and triage requests
  • Conduct research and proper due diligence to ensure that the filings are completed in full compliance with related regulatory requirements and furnished with proper audit trails
  • Prepare non-financial regulatory compliance filings for submission to federal, provincial and securities regulators across Canada and other jurisdictions
  • Prepare required documentation (e.g. written documentation and certifications) to support the operating businesses for KYC requests, business transactions and applications, board proceedings, etc)
  • Assist with other duties as delegated or assigned in the department, including routine and special projects, as required
  • Identify compliance requirements for day-to-day reportable compliance events in a compliance tracker and manage related processes and expectations with stakeholders involved
What do you need to succeed?
  • Advanced computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office applications, Adobe Acrobat Pro and data management systems) and use of office equipment
  • Meticulous, diligent, with a high attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to independently manage competing priorities with sensitivity to internal clients and deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Team player with a strong work ethic and a desire for continuous improvement
  • 3 to 6 years of experience as a Law Clerk in a public company’s Corporate Secretary’s Department, law firm or in-house legal environment
Preferred Skills:
  • Law Clerk designation or equivalent preferred
  • University degree or college diploma preferred
  • Knowledge of entity and document management systems (GEMS and iManage knowledge an asset)

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
