Joseph Brant Hospital (JBH) is a full-service community teaching hospital located in the growing and thriving community of Burlington, Ontario, serving more than 185,000 residents in Halton, Hamilton, Waterdown, Flamborough, Milton and Stoney Creek. JBH is a Clinical Education site in conjunction with McMaster University, and designated as an Academic Community Teaching Hospital. POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Manager of Clinical Information Systems and IT Applications, the Clinical Informatics Specialist plays an instrumental role in interacting with and supporting various clinical areas and implementing clinical applications. The Clinical Informatics Specialist applies principles of health informatics, clinical practice standards, data modelling, information systems, and computational thinking in the identification, collection, analysis, management and evaluation of data and information to support clinical practice automation in alignment with the hospitals digital health strategy.

The Clinical Informatics Specialist acts as a liaison for Patient Care Services (PCS), Physicians and/or Allied Health departments on all aspects of computerization and related reporting support. S/he utilizes knowledge health informatics and clinical practice to determine clinical functions suitable for automation using digital solutions and to ensure that deployed solutions meet clinical practice standards. S/he also assist in the design and development of new, or enhancements of existing hospital information system (HIS) functionality. Key aspects of this role include providing advice and support on the best use of clinical applications and liaising with our software vendors.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:


  • Use informatics principles and methods to design or implement health information technology applications to resolve clinical or health care administrative problems.
  • Translate nursing practice information requirements between nurses and systems engineers, application developer, and or other technical or clinical resources using a variety of requirements modeling and specification methodologies.
  • Analyze application problems and recommend modifications
  • Provide front line support to the Hospital Information Systems (HIS) and related applications. Facilitate educational training to ensure the clinical service area applications are utilized for maximum efficiency and users are informed of updates and revisions.
  • Develop or implement policies or practices to ensure the privacy, confidentiality or security of patient information.
  • Assess customer needs, analyze work flows, identify gaps/areas of concern, and provide recommendations for improvements in the format of business case type recommendations, from manual to the optimal use of technology solutions.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Clinical Informatics, Technical Services and Data Management teams in Health Information Technology to maintain, manage, modify and monitor systems.
  • Collaborate with health care professionals using automation to ensure appropriate, effective usage and understanding of the system that is in accordance with the organizational strategic goals.
  • Develop, implement or evaluate health information technology applications, tools, processes or structures to assist nurses, physicians and other providers with technology and informatics best practices.
  • Apply project management discipline and skills to move approved projects towards success and stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Design, develop, select, test, implement and evaluate new or modified informatics solutions, data structures and decision mechanisms to support patients and healthcare professionals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of the Meditech (preferably Client Server version) Clinical Modules and related components
  • Minimum of three years working experience in a healthcare setting in clinical informatics or related discipline
  • Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario or an equivalent allied health professional is an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and consultation skills to function within a complex interdisciplinary environment.
  • Demonstrated ability in project management, change management knowledge and experience, conceptual and analytical skills.
  • University degree in Health Informatics or related field, Master’s preferred, alternatively minimum of five years of clinical experience required, coupled with in-depth knowledge of clinical disciplines and certification in Clinical informatics
  • Knowledge and training in adult education and/or demonstrated skill in teaching/facilitating is as asset.
