Role:
We are seeking a motivated individual with the ability to work independently in a research laboratory setting. The ideal candidate will have expertise in analytical chemistry, including experience in liquid chromatograph-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The candidate will lead laboratory activities related to research and development projects involving trace analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aqueous and biological samples.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform routine operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments, including LC-MS/MS and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) systems.
- Prepare technical/progress reports.
- Lead method development and method validation initiatives, primarily related to trace analysis of PFAS in aqueous and biological samples using LC-MS/MS based methods.
- Provide technical assistance the senior project scientists and principal investigators.
- Lead any laboratory compliance and audit activities.
- May be required to deliver oral presentations at technical meetings and attend appropriate technical workshops.
- Lead the day-to-day operation and management of the analytical chemistry laboratory.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Experience with laboratory supervision, laboratory operations and organization,
- Experience in solid-phase extraction (SPE) techniques for sample extraction and clean-up of aqueous and biological samples.
- Experience in the operation and maintenance of LC-MS/MS systems.
- Must be able to work onsite at Simon Fraser University Burnaby Campus, Burnaby, BC.
- Experience in the development and application of LC-MS based methods for quantitative analysis of organic chemicals in aqueous and biological samples.
- Demonstrates strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage competing deadlines.
- Ability to work independently or as a part of a team.
- Excellent organizational, time and priority management skills.
- Experience in the application of standard QA/QC and laboratory compliance procedures is highly desirable.
- Ph.D. or MSc. in Science (PhD in Analytical Chemistry is preferred but other analytical experience will also be considered).
