The Opportunity
The Garron Centre for Child & Adolescent Mental Health is a 14-bed unit that serves youth across the Maritimes who require acute, intensive mental health care. Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the Therapeutic Teacher works with an interdisciplinary treatment team and delivers education programming for school-aged adolescents in an on-site therapeutic classroom. Curriculum follows the learning outcomes established by the provincial Department of Education. In addition to classroom and individualized learning, educational strategies and professional learning, the Therapeutic Teacher works with members of the interdisciplinary team to help adolescents and families cope with mental health and addiction issues, to assist in the design, development and implementation of individual educational programming, and to provide support to schools in the successful reintegration of clients. The Therapeutic Teacher also leads the planning for new admissions, attends case conferences and discharge planning meetings, and where indicated, participates in individual educational counselling of clients. In collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, the Therapeutic Teacher provides consultation to ensure adequate consideration is given to learning deficits/challenges when addressing various needs (e.g., educational, vocational, behavioural management, basic social skills etc.), coordinates the client’s transition to community schools, and monitors educational progress through treatment.
Hours of Work
Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Occasional after-hours support may be required.
Your Qualifications
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise with families, community groups, and schools to advance the educational needs of clients required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interprofessional care team, while effectively carrying out administrative responsibilities required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with adolescent with cognitive impairments, speech and language delays, etc. required.
  • Successful completion of a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Basic Life Support Level (BLS) Program within the last 12 months or successful completion of a BLS Renewal Challenge Certificate required.
  • NVCI certification required.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset.
  • Familiarity with Department of Education Learning Outcomes for grades 7 – 12 required.
  • Recent experience working with adolescents with mental health and addiction challenges (i.e., attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety disorder, mood disorder, and substance use) required.
  • Recent experience and training in special education is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and competency in meeting IWK clinical documentation standards preferred.
  • Demonstrated capacity to implement proactive and positive behavior supports in the classroom required.
  • Demonstrated excellent time management, workload prioritization, and organizational skills required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years teaching experience required.
  • Recent experience and/or training in working with children and youth with exceptionalities required.
  • Valid Nova Scotia Teacher’s Certificate required, minimum of ITC or equivalent certification.
  • Working knowledge of Trauma Informed Care, the Connect Model, and Harm Reduction Approach preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to support the educational needs of youth with interrupted learning required.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication and interpersonal skills required.
