Position Purpose
The overall duty of this position is to observe and learn all aspect of the day-to-day NDT activities from the Senior Technician and Field Supervisor in compliance with legislated industry codes, standards and procedures. Under the direct guidance of the Senior Technician, the Trainee Technician supports NDT inspections by assisting in the planning and preparation of the work, supplying and/or holding materials or tools required for the applicable NDT method/s, transports the necessary equipment required to perform the inspections, assists in the setup and tear down of equipment and ensures the work area and equipment is clean.
This project is located in Skookumchuck, British Columbia.
Due to the nature of this position there will be on-call and overtime requirements as well as some travel.
Duties And Responsibilities
  • Assists in the preparation and completion of all necessary paperwork required in compliance with client, industry and company standards and policies.
  • Strong commitment to quality inspection and reporting.
  • Observes test procedures and product compliance to learn internal and industry specifications.
  • Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary.
  • Actively promotes and proactively models the company’s focus on safety when interacting with all current and future employees and clients.
  • Replenishes and organizes the required supplies, as needed, for the applicable assigned NDT methods.
  • Adhering to organizational policies and procedures, including but not limited to Applus Code of Ethics and Confidentiality Agreements.
  • Observes and learns proper documentation and reporting processes required for NDT in accordance to relevant industry codes, standards and procedures.
  • Assists the Senior Technicians in work execution and daily tasks assigned as required.
  • Observes and learns the procedures required to perform work and to gain certification in the required NDT methods.
  • Represents Applus with outside groups, regulatory bodies, associations, and clients.
  • Responsible for cleanliness of all work areas and vehicles.
Knowledge And Skills
  • Basic knowledge of radiation safety and operational field requirements regarding radiation safety.
  • A sense of urgency, good attention to detail, excellent organizational and analytical skills, pragmatic, eager to learn.
  • Theoretical knowledge and basic understanding of NDT techniques, services and procedures.
  • Focused on continuous improvement and committed to learning new practices and developing better ways of doing things.
  • Ability to read technical documents and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of industry codes, regulations and practices.
  • Firmly adheres to the values and ethics of Applus. Exhibits honesty, discretion, confidentiality, and sound judgment.
  • Strong computer skills in MS Office and other software applications.
  • Ability to operate NDT equipment including setup and tear down.
  • Ability to adapt in a high pressure and high production environment while managing competing priorities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills matched with the ability to negotiate and build relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Excellent customer service focus, ability to quickly build strong working relationships with business partners and colleagues.
  • Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize, solve problems, and consistently meet deadlines.

Education And Work Experience
  • High School Diploma or Canadian General Equivalency Diploma, (GED).
  • Previous experience in NDT is a strong asset.
  • Completion of a recognized NDT College Program in Canada.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
Working Conditions
  • Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials in various working environments.
  • Occasional to frequent travel will be required within Canada.
  • Occasionally required to work in noisy/loud working environments especially on project sites.
  • Work outside of normal business hours will be occasionally required.
  • Working conditions will vary between project locations.
  • Commonly exposed to walking on slippery or uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to be flexible with work schedules and respond to requests without advance warning or notification.
  • Required to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid and dry/arid conditions in temperature extremes and inclement weather.
  • Overtime required during the week and weekend with work volume.
