At UBC, we believe that attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce is key to the successful pursuit of excellence in research, innovation, and learning for all faculty, staff and students. Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.
Job Summary
The SAER Fitness Instructor will work collaboratively with a study team consisting of researchers, clinicians and patients to run an exercise and physical activity promotion intervention for South Asian patients after their discharge from supervised rehabilitation for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) at the Matsqui Recreational Center in Abbotsford.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
The Centre for Clinical Epidemiology & Evaluation (C2E2) undertakes research and training and provides evidence-based advice to advance a sustainable health system for British Columbians. C2E2 scientists and many of its staff, including this position are part of the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH). SPPH is an innovative unit that encompasses many of the health-related groupings at UBC as a collaborative venture. The School is structured around four divisions: Occupational and Environmental Health; Health Services and Policy; Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health Practice; and Health in Populations. The resulting mix of professions and disciplines is seen as a means of connecting individuals and learners to galvanize the relationship between health research, public health and health services and to enhance learning.
The SAER Fitness Instructor will be accountable to the UBC Principal Investigator. The incumbent will communicate daily with the Intervention Development Specialist and the Study Research Coordinator.
WORK PERFORMED
The SAER Fitness Instructor will:
  • Lead the exercise and physical activity program specifically designed for patients of South Asian origin who have had knee replacement surgery and have completed their rehabilitation. The program will include walking, dancing, strength training, balance activities, education, and activity coaching. The program will be run at a recreational center from August 2023 to November 2023
  • Together with study team members, collect health and fitness data from the study participants.
  • Participate in other research activities as required by the study team.
  • Register participants, keep track of their attendance, adverse events (e.g. fall, muscle soreness), exercise and physical activities per week, etc.
  • Use activity coaching strategies to help participants achieve their goals
  • Attend training sessions prior to the start of the community program
  • Keep notes describing their experience delivering the program, what modifications were made to the program over time, etc.
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR
This position acts with considerable independence although close communication and coordination with the research team is essential. The incumbent's doings and demeanor reflect on research done at UBC. Poor decisions or errors may cause a loss of reputation for the PI, the research team and UBC.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
After initial training, works independently with regular consultation with the core study team members including the UBC Principal Investigator, Behavioural Intervention Specialist and the Research Coordinator.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Behavioural coaching experience will be an asset.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in Punjabi and English (orally and in writing)
  • Demonstrated ability to run exercise and fitness classes and work independently
  • Experience working directly with patients in the areas of arthritis and TKA rehabilitation will be beneficial
