Job Description
Work at CBC/Radio-Canada
At CBC/Radio-Canada, we create content that informs, entertains and connects Canadians on multiple platforms. Our successes and accomplishments are driven by embodying and upholding values, which include creativity, integrity, inclusiveness and relevance.
Do you think you have the ability and drive to keep up with this exciting, ever-changing industry? Whether it be in front of the camera, on air, online or behind the scenes, you would be joining a team that thrives on making connections and telling stories that are important to Canadians.
Your role
CBC has an amazing opportunity for an individual to join our team in London. You’ll be contributing to the top ranked station in the city that leads the way in innovative storytelling on digital, audio, video and social platforms. You’ll be a leader in the newsroom and you’ll play a lead role in rebuilding London Morning around a brand new host and morning newsreader.
You are committed to reflecting contemporary Canada through the content you help create. You are a leader who is passionate about everything that makes London the city that it is - its people and its neighbourhoods, its culture and its sports, its politics and its businesses. You thrive on conversation, both with staff and the communities we serve. You put audience needs at the centre of your decision-making, and are committed to reflecting stories from London and area in your daily journalism. You understand the role of the public broadcaster in building a stronger local community, with demonstrated experience creating content that reflects underrepresented groups, newcomers, Black and Indigenous communities. You are a champion of creating an inclusive news and current affairs team, in your editorial choices and within the newsroom.
As a multi-platform Content Producer, your primary role is the production of stories across all platforms, with a focus on setting the daily agenda. You understand audio, and will work closely with the station’s flagship radio program London Morning and Afternoon Drive with an ear and an eye for on-demand audio and video content. You will play a pivotal role in redeveloping the sound and feel of the morning show around the strengths and personality of a new host. You are an excellent writer, an experienced journalist and a leader who thrives with high-performance teams and cultivates a positive, inclusive workplace culture.
You focus your daily decision making on ensuring people in positions of power are held to account, while giving Londoners what they need to make up their own minds. You thrive on pushing breaking news to multiple platforms, with an emphasis on digital and visual storytelling. Nothing makes you happier than working with a team to develop original, enterprise journalism. You’re paying attention to what people are talking about and you look for ways to bring those voices to the table. You understand that CBC London is a place where conversations start and you want to ensure they’re amplified as far-and-wide as possible.
You inspire people to bring out their creative best. You make story your number one priority, and guide reporters throughout the reporting process, from pitch, to gather, to production. You are aware of emerging trends around on-demand and live video, you understand our different platforms, and how to shape a story to play into each one’s strengths. You have experience that allows you to work with journalists to help them shape stories through audio, video and photography. You are committed to creating a trusting relationship with the audiences of London and the CBC London team.
Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies, standards and practices. There may be wide latitude for initiative, independent judgment and creativity. There is a regular and ongoing requirement to co-ordinate the work of others, within London and with other CBC centres. You must be willing to roll-up your sleeves and do the hard work when needed. You're technically adept, and welcome the opportunity to experiment.
As Required, You Will Perform The Following Tasks
  • Coordinate resources and coverage plans for daily content creation, as well as special projects, series, remote broadcasts and streaming content.
  • Frequently contact newsmakers, organizations and community groups to develop a database of ideas for stories and/or programming specials.
  • Participate in the preparation of content for local and national audiences, including assigning, researching, gathering, writing and/or editing.
  • Aid in the critical analysis around story selections, treatment and placement, and feedback on the same.
  • Aid in determining the style, pace, tempo, line-up and format of digital material and programs.
  • Select, re-write and/or edit copy or text written by others.
  • Provide regular feedback and coaching to experienced and developing journalists.
  • With the executive producer, help lead the program and team development of the flagship radio programme London Morning.
  • Conceive and develop story and program ideas and concepts for all platforms.
We Are Looking For a Candidate With The Following
  • Work with a team to develop content for the most appropriate time of day.
  • Advanced knowledge of broadcast platforms, web, mobile and social media tools and industry trends, and fluency using them.
  • Recent journalistic track record working on digital and broadcast platforms.
  • Critical thinker with strong analytical skills to support your ability to make complex issues easily understood.
  • A demonstrated knowledge of the social, political and cultural life of London, with a strong focus on connecting with underserved communities and equity-seeking groups.
  • Proven experience coaching teams to success.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada’s insurance company, other classes considered an asset.
  • Able to generate original, compelling material on a daily basis.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, highly creative and resourceful.
  • A proven ability to tell stories with credibility and authority.
  • University degree or equivalent with five years of experience, with experience working in broadcasting.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to maintain close cooperation with a team.
  • Proven experience in producing audio current affairs, with a flair for using sound.
  • Fluent and confident in the use of CBC owned and operated sites, including local news and programming apps, CBC Listen and Gem.
