The Electrical Engineer provides electrical design and project management services, from the conceptual stage through to commissioning, for capital projects and maintenance support activities involving the Corporation's generating stations and transmission and distribution systems. The incumbent will be required to perform under minimum supervision.
- Successful completion of a Criminal Records Check will be required.
- Participates in the development of the annual Corporate Capital Plan by identifying capital work items for consideration. Conducts plant assessment and feasibility studies, using present value and life cycle analysis, for the upgrade or rehabilitation of existing facilities and for the construction of new facilities. Prepares Project Briefs in accordance with Corporate guidelines.
- Takes part in the development and selection of Corporate technical standards, procedures and policies.
- Excellent communication and writing skills.
- Class 5 driver's license.
- Above average interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
- Prepares Requests-For-Proposals (RFP's), including the detailed scope of work, for services that are to be provided by engineering consultants and specialists. Carries out the analysis of RFP's received, recommending the selection of appropriate consultants. Performs administration work on agreements for consultant services and processes progress payments for review and approval .
- Must have a Bachelors or Masters degree in electrical engineering with a minimum of 5 years of related experience in a utility or industrial setting of which two years are directly related to diesel and/or hydroelectric power generation. Equivalencies may be considered.
- Accomplished computer skills and ability to apply electrical design software.
- Prepares technical specifications, tender documents, drawings and cost estimates for projects that are designed in-house. Carries out design checks and reviews the work done by engineering consultants, specialists and in-house design staff.
- Prepares preliminary and final detailed designs for the electrical systems associated with the Corporation's diesel and hydro-electric generating stations and transmission and distribution substations, including generating plant, switchgear and electrical apparatus installations, engine and generator control systems, protective relaying systems and SCADA systems. Designs shall be practical, economical and meet or exceed the latest edition of all applicable codes, standards and regulations.
- Registered with NAPEG to practice as a Professional Engineer in the NWT.
- Performs on-site construction supervision, prepares detailed, project-specific electrical commissioning procedures and carries out or witnesses, as appropriate, the commissioning of electrical systems.
