City Experiences is seeking a Deckhand for our City Cruises operation in Toronto.
  • Please note this is a seasonal/contract position*

This person will be adaptable, dynamic, and embody City Experiences’ RESPECT Service System.
About The Opportunity
The Deckhand is responsible to maintain the appearance, cleanliness and will perform various tasks related to vessels and around company property. Crew members will ensure guest comfort and safety while underway and assist with docking and undocking. Deckhands will also aid in the upkeep of their associated equipment, piers, and building structures as needed and assigned. They will provide preventative, corrective, emergency, cosmetic and routine maintenance. They will also assist the hospitality team with event operations throughout the evening.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Other duties as assigned by the Captain, First Mate, and Restaurant Manager on duty
  • Complete maintenance projects and repair work within the timeframe assigned, and inform management of all progress, delays, and/or challenges.
  • Help the Restaurant Manager with additional hospitality duties as requested
  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms
  • Assist Captain and supervisory personnel in maintain vessel equipment and systems such as HVAC, engine, and technical equipment
  • Participate in routine safety drills to prepare for major incidents
  • Assists with the startup and completion of projects
  • Maintain the cleanliness and safety of all common areas. Sweep, mop, and wash down decks and exterior to remove dirt, and debris, using brooms, mops, brushes, and hoses. Service, clean, and supply restrooms
  • Maintenance and repair of vessel systems, and troubleshooting as needed, ie. potable water systems, sewage systems (associated pumps/piping), shore power transfer to generators, steering gear systems, bilge pump/alarms, sump pumps, galley grey water piping systems
  • Set up and break down dining room and service stations as prescribed; this requires movement of dining cabin furniture
  • Be prepared to begin work at scheduled time
  • Load or unload materials from vessels; gather and remove trash from vessel
  • Provide exceptional hospitality to guests and coworkers as prescribed in our RESPECT Service System
  • Maintenance and repair of building structures, ie. sanding, painting, varnishing, lighting, plumbing, light carpentry work (door frame/wall repair).
  • Must always use proper safety equipment
  • Handle lines to moor vessels to pier
  • Maintain uniform and personal grooming in compliance with appearance standards
  • Communicate effectively with all team members and management in order to ensure projects are completed in a timely, cost-effective manner

  • Follow safety procedures in order to ensure the protection of passengers and vessel
  • Stand watch in ships' bows, sterns, or bridge wings in order to look for obstructions in a ship’s path or to locate navigational aids such as buoys and lighthouses
Requirements & Qualifications
  • Will be required to be available for work on all major holidays
  • O.S.S.D. or equivalent as recognized by the Ministry of Education
  • Marine experience an asset
  • Working knowledge of Lock Out Tag Out Systems
  • Ability to reach, bend, stoop, wipe, push, pull, move or lift up to 50 pounds (23 kilograms)
  • Must be able to effectively understand and convey written and verbal information to guests and coworkers
  • First Aid Certification an asset
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities/tasks
  • Energetic and enthusiastic personality essential
  • Must possess a service orientation – actively looking for ways to help others
  • Will work for extended periods of time without sitting
  • WHIMIS (training provided)
  • Required to lift furniture and other heavy items such as provisions up and down stairs. Required to throw mooring lines from ship to pier.
