Job Description
Summary The Commissioning Specialist is responsible for preparing commissioning procedures and commissioning of hydroelectric turbine-generator units. Working with the Commissioning Leader, the Commissioning Specialist will be reviewing designs, preparing commissioning procedures, plan tooling requirements and, if needed, perform verification of instruments, commissioning auxiliaries’ system and the turbine & generator at site.

Essential Responsibilities


  • Providing support with technical expertise when required to drive high level accuracy proposal delivery.
  • Work with the field instrumentation technician to plan and support the pre-commissioning effort;
  • Perform LOTO and safety preparations as required by the commissioning tests;
  • Collaborate in resolving complex problems.
  • Analyze specifications & participate in Base of Scope definition;
  • Provide support to the site teams regarding the technical issues or challenges;
  • Ensure on-time delivery of documentation, procedures & reports;
  • Support the project execution team on commissioning matters;
  • Perform acceptance tests as per IEEE115 on synchronous Generators;
  • Contribute to overall quality and excellence in execution of installation & commissioning.
  • Perform the commissioning of the turbine & generator including vibration analysis and balancing;
  • Enhance commissioning team's technical excellence by participation in technical support, training and mentoring on best practices, calculations, etc.;
  • Responsible for the start-up of the various auxiliaries’ system;
  • Technical governance and customer relations on commissioning matters;
  • Ensure work is performed safely according with GE standards and local requirements;
  • Leverage reference projects executed in the past.
  • Perform instrument functionality verification at site;
  • Determine strategy pertaining to labor, scheduling, logistics, conditions, etc.;
  • Keep good records about site activities, work performed, issues faced and how they were dealt with (non-conformity) to provide feedback to business and support it with information in case of claims;


Required Qualifications


  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Hydroelectric power plants, its systems and sub-systems or equivalent;
  • Ability and willingness to work on project sites in Canada and US; approximately 30% of the time
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or relevant experience;


Desired Characteristics


  • Good understanding of electro-mechanical systems;
  • Understand and implement, when required, cost and schedule control for commissioning scope;
  • Proficiency in any data acquisition software considered an asset;
  • Ability to comply with mandatory requests on time, such as: trainings, timesheets, expense reports, daily reports, etc.;
  • Strong customer service orientation;
  • Ability to multitask and shift between many different projects and initiatives with tight deadlines;
  • Resilience.
  • Strong EHS culture;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, team work skills and autonomy;
  • Must be proficient in French and English;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) and have good computer skills;
  • Ability to navigate cross-functions and create a good rapport with other teams (Project Management, Engineering, Finance, Fleet Support, EHS, HR, etc.);
  • Understanding and knowledge of IEEE 115 considered an asset;
  • Electrical or mechanical installation experience considered an asset.
