Job Description
POSITION PURPOSE:

Reporting to a Program Manager, Departmental Communications, is responsible for the graphic design of all communication products for the Community and Health Services Department. Working with the Branch and Regional staff the Graphic Designer designs, develops and implements a consistent communication strategy for the Department.      

 


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Provides consultation to Department management and staff prior and during projects regarding graphic design, effective presentation of information and methods of conveying intended messages to the selected target audience.
  • Represents the Community and Health Services Department, participates on committees, task forces and work groups as assigned. 
  • Conceptualizes, develops and produces a wide range of communication products (including brochures, factsheets, reports, displays) that promote and support the program activities of the five operational branches of the Community and Health Services Department.
  • Prepares presentations as required.
  • Provides consultation and graphic design expertise to support continuity and consistency of Departmental programs and services messaging.
  • Purchases materials required for design and/or production. Liases with external suppliers regarding the provision of  cost-effective materials as well as timely delivery.
  • Ensures that services provided to internal and external clients, customers meet Regional customer service standards. 
  • Provides input to reports, as directed.
  • Performs other related functions as assigned, in accordance with the job responsibilities or other necessary department objectives.
  • Arranges for production of communications materials including obtaining quotes, preparing camera-ready artwork and negotiating deadline dates with internal and external printers.
  • Prepares customized documents, integrating text and graphic elements (including charts, tables, graphs) as required.


QUALIFICATIONS


  • Well developed presentation and communication skills and demonstrated ability to apply the principles of graphic design to support and enhance Department initiatives.
  • Successful completion of a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Degree with a specialization in Graphic Design or successful completion of a Community College Graphic Design Program or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies including customer service, communication, team work, initiative/self management and accountability, and flexibility/adaptability.
  • Thorough knowledge and demonstrated ability in computerized design and knowledge of related software, including Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, QuarkXpress, Flash and Microsoft Office applications. 
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in graphic design with demonstrated experience using a wide variety of communication strategies or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of traditional and new marketing concepts, communications technologies and broad knowledge of graphic design technology.
