Job Description

Position Overview

The Director, Mortgage Underwriting leads a group of teams of underwriting professionals, ensuring adjudication of mortgage applications are in accordance with the 5 C’s (Capacity, Capital, Collateral, Character, Conditions) within HTC’s pipeline management. Assessing risk and ensuring all applications adhere to both quality and service standards remain the overarching focus for this role through coaching and mentoring their respective teams. Director has an overarching view of the portfolio.


Position Responsibilities


Risk and Compliance

  • Review, analyze and verify mortgage applications for completeness, accuracy, suitability and risk to ensure compliance with all aspects of Home Trust Company’s underwriting policies, procedures and guidelines per delegated authority matrices
  • Participate in Quality Assurance file reviews to ensure ongoing quality and accuracy standards are maintained
  • Adhere to applicable compliance obligations including Privacy, Anti-Money Laundering/Anti-Terrorist Financing and internal Anti-Fraud Policy requirements
  • File Unusual Transaction Reports as applicable to fulfil individual employee obligations to detect and deter financial crimes activity

Leadership

  • Lead by example and provide daily feedback and coaching to team members
  • Train, coach and mentor Managers and hold a monthly ‘one on one’ session to discuss individual progress
  • Succession planning – Identify opportunities for employee promotion and development
  • Provide input to training department, assist in the development of the training program and the incorporation of the training content into HTC daily practices.
  • Monitor productivity and workflow to ensure optimal team efficiency and quality in adjudicating prospect applications
  • Accountable for maintenance of team pipeline, adherence to pipeline management process and daily review of pipeline reporting
  • Foster a team environment focused on achieving all departmental objectives and goals in support of the business plan
  • Complete action plans and special projects, as required/requested
  • Recommend process improvements and provide strategic direction aimed at enhancing operational efficiency
  • Participate in budget planning and allocation and ensure team operations fall within allocated Director budget

File Management

  • Stand as the point of escalation for Managers
  • Take a hands-on leadership approach to make prudent credit decisions on complex mortgage files
  • Ensure quality in all prepared files under review
  • Manage and respond to the escalation inbox
  • Review and approve loan terms and pricing within delegated authority

Communication

  • Liaise with Sales to facilitate portfolio progression, support broker relationship and maximize underwriting effectiveness
  • Responsible for identifying new employment opportunities and working with Human Resources to complete the recruitment and hiring of new employees
  • Coordinate, collaborate and cooperate with other internal HTC departments to facilitate portfolio development and progression
  • Adhere to defined Service Level Agreement in acknowledging applications and following up on additional required information
  • Remain current on latest industry developments and market trends to secure competitive advantage


Formal Education

  • Additional relevant accreditation(s), certification(s) are assets
  • University degree in related area or discipline

Related Experience

  • In depth understanding of residential mortgage products
  • 5+ years leading a team within mortgage lending
  • Significant experience in reviewing residential mortgages
