Job Summary


The Faculty of Engineering at Dalhousie University provides an opportunity to be part of an excellent engineering school in a leading, research-intensive Canadian University. Reporting to the Dean, the Director, Finance and Administration is the senior position in the Faculty of Engineering responsible for financial and human resource management and non-academic administrative activities. The incumbent plans, analyzes, manages, and reports on budget administration, human resource management and business operations by developing, maintaining and monitoring internal administrative systems to facilitate effective, efficient and sustainable operations.


Key Responsibilities


  • Oversees all human resource activities for the Faculty, including the direction of the Faculty Administrator, ensuring adherence to University and Faculty policies and procedures in the conduct of employment searches, appointment of faculty and staff, and other employment matters.
  • Regularly monitors budget variances and meets with the Dean, Department Heads, Directors, and administrators to resolve outstanding budget variance issues.
  • Develops the annual operating, endowment, and special purpose budgets for the Faculty of Engineering, including allocation of budgetary resources to operating units. Critically reviews and provides recommendations on budget proposals from Department Heads and Directors.
  • Works collaboratively with the Dean to develop annual and long-term financial plans for the Faculty, and creates and maintains multi-year financial forecasts.
  • Oversees financial management and administration of the Faculty’s research centres and associated units by designing, implementing and monitoring internal administrative systems to facilitate effective, efficient, and sustainable unit operations.
  • Manages the allocation of restricted and special purpose funding, endowment income, and external revenues to address resource requirements not met through the operating budget.


Note


The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Required Qualifications


  • Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgement in a complex organizational environment.
  • Strong leadership abilities along with supervisory/management experience.
  • Graduate Degree (e.g. MBA ) and a professional accounting designation, plus eight years’ related financial management and human resource administration experience in an academic environment (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Well developed planning and project management skills and a commitment to continuing professional development.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, communication (verbal and written), analytical skills and competence using information technology tools.
